Up for sale, a 1963 Gretsch Clipper model 6186 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. Essentially a stripped down, more slender version of the Anniversary 6124, sharing that iconic guitar’s parallel tonebar bracing, this well-kept Clipper features a single Hi-Lo’Tron pickup and a gloss Shaded Golden Sunburst nitro lacquer finish.
This Clipper was produced in the Pre-Baldwin era of manufacturing when production totals were smaller and quality generally higher. The maple body measures 15 3/4“ wide at the lower bout, with a body depth of just 1 7/8“, and this instrument delivers plenty of treble attack and barky breadth acoustically. The Hi-Lo’Tron pickup is essentially a single coil version of the Filter’Tron, known for shimmering highs, mellow lows, and overall a very lively response. This Clipper model 6186 weighs 5lbs 6oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Maple
-Shape: Slender C, measuring .825” 1st fret, .880” 9th fret
-Fretboard: Brazilian rosewood, dot inlay
-Frets: Slender, faint wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-2
-Scale Length: 24.6”
-Nut: 1 11/16”
-Tuners: Kluson Deluxe single-line strip (vintage, replacement)
Body Specs:
-Wood: Maple
-Pickups: Hi-Lo’Tron single coil
-Controls: Volume, Tone
-Hardware: Ebony compensated bridge, trapeze tailpiece, “G” pointer knobs
-Plastics: One-ply plexi pickguard
-Serialization: 55-prefix stamp (label, bass-side f hole) dates to ‘63
The gloss Shaded Golden Sunburst nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, and this “target burst” style Sunburst with ample black on the body edges is generally only seen on select examples produced from 1963-64. There are some small finish chips on top at the lower bout and just a few minor finish scratches and nicks on the back and sides. The binding is bright white and remarkably clean for a Gretsch of this era, with a few small reglued splits. The nitro gloss on the neck profile is clean and smooth.
A hardshell case is included.
