Up for sale, a 1963 Gibson SG Special in collector-grade, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Boasting a rich and unfaded original nitro lacquer Cherry gloss finish, this golden age Gibson SG features a solid mahogany body and one-piece mahogany neck capped with a thick, dark Brazilian rosewood slab fretboard. This combination of tonewoods yields a lively, detailed and warm natural response. Featherweight at only 6lbs 6oz, this SG delivers a broad range of tones from glassy, articulate cleans to rich midrange growl and overdriven roar. Sensitive to picking dynamics, the P-90 pair is ripping and aggressive in the bridge position, and broad and smooth at the neck. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this SG with 10-46 strings and low action. The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender, fast-feeling C-shaped profile carve with modest shoulder at the nut and a hair more heft and roundness as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .795" at the 1st fret and .865" at the 12th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is an extremely dark, tight-grained cut of this hallowed tonewood, and the original medium jumbo frets have plenty of meat, showing only light uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-2, with wear extending beneath the plain strings until fret 6. The guitar plays easily up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nylon nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the set of original Kluson Deluxe single line strip tuners with stock white buttons turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The electronics are 100% stock with untouched solder joints and original Centralab pots that date to the 44th week of '62. Both original P-90 pickups have clean bobbins, original winds, and stock covers. The nickel-plated wraparound bridge is original, and the "lightning bolt" intonation is designed for a wound G string. The small batwing pickguard and switch surround are stock, and the original quartet of black reflector cap knobs are present too.The original gloss nitro lacquer Cherry finish is extremely bold in its presentation, showing zero finish fade with tight and faint horizontal lacquer checking on the body. There is a very slight, professionally addressed split on the bass-side of the neck tenon and corner of the heel, with a few small finish chips on the lower bout body edge, very light buckle rash on the back, and a few additional minor marks consistent with light, careful use. One small chip in the mahogany is present on the bass-side headstock edge, and the gloss nitro lacquer on the profile is clean and smooth, free of palm wear. The original mid-line Gibson case is included. This case has more structure and boasts nicer materials than the base model chipboard case, closer in its resemblance to the brown Lifton hardshells of the late '50s. The case has a clean brown exterior with a subtly arched lid, leather trim, original handle, and functional latches.
