Up for sale, a 1963 Fender Precision Bass in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original blonde tolex hardshell case. A rare custom color Pre-CBS example finished in Olympic White with a Desert Sand base coat, this Precision is an extremely expressive instrument, with tonewoods comprising an alder body, maple neck, and a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Delivering a smooth, balanced natural acoustic sound, the split coil black bobbin pickup offers plenty of fullness and woody thump with excellent treble articulation and a sweet, defined tonal character in every register. The bass weighs 8lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with moderate shoulder at the nut, gaining more roundness and substance further up the fretboard with lightly rolled fretboard edges in every register, measuring .840" deep at the 1st fret and .995" at the 12th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is extremely dark and tight-grained with clay dot inlay, retaining the original slender fretwire which shows only very light wear on the crowns of frets 1-5. The bass plays cleanly in all registers, and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The truss rod nut is somewhat recessed from the heel, still functioning as intended with various string gauges and tensions. The nut measures a full 1 3/4" in width. The headstock face retains the original flawless Precision Bass waterslide decal, and the original nickel-plated long stem clover-button tuning machines have plenty of shine with only light surface patina, turning smoothly and holding pitch well. The neck heel has an August, 1963 date stamp, and the neck pocket has its factory paint stick markings, indicative of an original finish.
All of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and original windings on the split coil black bobbin pickup. The original pair of Stackpole pots date to the 29th week of '63. Hardware includes the original bridge with spiral saddles, L-prefix neck plate, knurled knobs, and "ashtray" bridge cover, all of which have bright chrome plating save for some flaking of the chrome on the knob tops. Plastics comprise the original pickup covers and a vintage finger rest. The original vibrant nitrate red tortoise pickguard exhibits a small amount of shrinkage as evidenced by the sliver of the aluminum shielding plate exposed on the bass side of the guard.
The niro lacquer Olympic White finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, showing some scattered dings and small finish chips mostly relegated to the lower bout body edge, a spot of light buckle rash central to the back, light case rub on the outside edge of the treble side body horn, and light forearm wear down to the Desert Sand base coat on the bass-side lower bout edge. The nitro gloss on the neck profile is smooth and lightly ambered with very light palm wear through the gloss mostly on the treble-side fretboard edge from frets 1-5, with a few scattered shallow marks on the profile length.
