Up for sale, a 1962 Martin D-18 dreadnought acoustic guitar in excellent condition. This Martin has received all the maintenance due an acoustic of this vintage including a carved bone nut and saddle and a professional neck reset. Tonewoods include a solid X-braced spruce top and mahogany back and sides, with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, offering a traditional Martin dreadnought tonal profile.
This D-18 positively sings with incredible projection and power, yielding an open, ringing quality indicative of a top that’s been worked in for decades. The guitar has excellent string-to-string clarity and an overarching warmth, and the trebles are woody and sparkling, with a gutsy, punchy bass register. The tonal response is very even as you travel up the fingerboard, and this Martin is featherweight at 3lbs 15oz. We've had this D-18 professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, dialed in with 12-53 strings, easy-playing action and optimal intonation.
The mahogany neck has a soft V-shaped profile carve, notably slender at the nut and gaining appreciable depth further up the fretboard, measuring .765" deep at the 1st fret and .960" at the 9th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a dark cut of this particular tonewood, professionally refretted in the guitar's lifetime. The frets have been leveled and crowned, currently showing no wear. The guitar plays cleanly up the 25.4" scale length, and an upgraded 1 11/16" wide hand-carved bone nut ensures ideal note clarity and sustain. The headstock features a Brazilian rosewood veneer on the face, with a gold Martin logo and original set of Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines that turn smoothly and hold pitch as intended. A previous owner also carved their ID # vertically on the back of the headstock between the tuners.
The Brazilian rosewood bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, fitted with a tall carved bone saddle and a new small maple bridge plate. The saddle has good height given a fresh neck reset, ensuring optimal playability for decades to come. The original tortoise pickguard is a vibrant, deep red, sitting flush with the top on all edges and freshly reseated so that there's no undue tension on the spruce.
The original gloss nitro lacquer finish exhibits strum wear across the soundhole, and the instrument is crack-free save for the small, professionally repaired “B string crack” between the treble-side pickguard edge and bridge. Cosmetic wear also includes buckle rash on the treble side of the back, and various nicks and scuffs on the body as a whole from honest use. The neck profile retains its lacquer finish as well, with scattered shallow marks extending the length of the profile, yet nothing distracting to the palm while fretting.
A modern black tolex Martin-branded TKL hardshell case is included.
