Up for sale, a 1962 Harmony Meteor H70 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. A stunningly well-kept example, this Meteor is 100% original save for an amber switch tip and personalized lettering on the upper bout. The guitar sports a pair of original DeArmond "moustache" gold foil pickups. What has made this particular Meteor an enduring favorite and a unique instrument among Harmony hollowbodies is the spruce top, which has a more complex and rich tone than the maple tops seen on later Meteors and all Rockets, Rebels, and assorted H prefix models. It's no wonder that Meteors found their way into the hands of players such as Keith Richards and Dave Davies early in their respective careers.
Acoustically, the guitar offers a big bold voice with tons of percussive cut and projection, and plugged in there's really nothing that can match the balance, clarity, and overall tonal character of a good pair of gold foil pickups. They have a cutting twang, tight bass, and a harmonically-rich midrange that sounds great when each pickup is singled out or when paired together. Both pickups have strong output, and when mated with the fully hollow body and spruce/maple tonewood combination, the sound benefits from both the immediate attack of the maple and the warmth and fullness of the hollow construction. The guitar is featherweight at 6lbs 8oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 11-49 strings and comfortable action.
The maple neck has one of the deeper and more substantial U-shaped neck profile carves we’ve ever encountered on a Meteor, measuring .980" deep at the 1st fret and 1.030" at the 11th before flattening out at the heel. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard features the original slender frets which have their full factory height, showing virtually no wear, playing easily up the straight neck with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The original nylon nut measures 1 3/4" in width. On the headstock, the original raised metal "Harmony Meteor" badge is fully intact and near mint, and the guitar retains the original open-gear Waverly tuning machines which turn smoothly.
The moustache gold foil pickups are intact, and this particular gold foil iteration features adjustable pole pieces to better balance the individual string's output. Both pickups retain their Rowe Industries foil stickers (DeArmond's parent company) on the baseplates and matching Nov 8th, 1962 date stamps. Both pickups have their Brazilian rosewood pickup risers too, matching the original floating Brazilian rosewood bridge with bone saddle insert. Visible through the bass-side F hole, the original H70 model stamp and 1962 date stamp is present. The surrounds on the moustache gold foils have particularly gleaming plating, and the nickel trapeze tailpiece is also original with uniform surface patina. Plastics include the original quartet of unaged cream cupcake knobs with flawless gold lettering and the original red tortoise nitrate pickguard.
The guitar features the original Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss finish, highlighting light curly flame figuring central to the back. Exceedingly clean, the guitar shows only a few light finish scratches and minor marks on the instrument as a whole.
This Meteor is dialed in to play its best with fresh strings, low action, and a great range of traditional DeArmond gold foil tones.
