1962 Fender Jazzmaster Vintage Pre-CBS Offset Guitar Sunburst Slab Board w/ Case & Hangtag

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1962 Fender Jazzmaster in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtag. 100% original save for a professional refret and hand-carved bone nut, this early example of the Jazzmaster model features a May, 1962 neck date and pots that date back to the 19th week of '61.

Extremely lively, resonant, and full-sounding acoustically at 8lbs 3oz, the tonewoods comprise an alder body, maple neck, and thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard. The black bobbin pickups are well-balanced and powerful, with the clarity and cut of your favorite Fender single coil, yet providing a warmth and nuance that's unique to the Jazzmaster pickup design, with the original pickup windings extending all the way to the very edge of the bobbins. Whether you desire the sinewy snap of early surf recordings or the seminal attack of your favorite Elvis Costello or Sonic Youth records, it's hard to beat a real Pre-CBS Jazzmaster. Professionally setup and dialed in to perfection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, where we specialize in Offset Fender guitars, this Jazzmaster features 11-49 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, quickly gaining appreciable roundness and heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .785" deep at the 1st fret, .865" at the 5th fret, and .985" at the 12th. The thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a dark, tight-grained cut, sporting clay dot inlay and retaining its 7 1/4" radius. The board has been professionally refretted with vintage-spec 6230-size fretwire, and the frets have perfectly rounded crowns, showing only very light wear on the crowns of frets 1-7. The guitar plays easily in every register up the straight neck with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The upgraded hand-carved bone nut measures 1.645" in width (just a hair wider than 1 5/8"). On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines are intact and turn smoothly. The nitro lacquer on the headstock face retains the pristine original Jazzmaster waterslide decal. The neck heel retains its bold May, 1962 date stamp, and the truss rod nut is flush with the heel, necessitating sparingly little adjustment in the last 60 years.

The electronics function flawlessly with untouched solder joints and Stackpole pots that date to the 19th week of '61. Both pickups have extremely clean black bobbins, original windings, and clean white pickup covers. The original vibrato tailpiece works exceptionally well in concert with the stock bridge, responding to the lightest touch for quick flutters, surfy warbles and deep dives, jumping back to the original pitch with ease and complete with the original arm. The hardware has clean chrome plating, save for some surface patina on the saddles, and the serialized neck plate matches the hand-written serial on the original hangtag. The nitrate tortoise pickguard is a deep red with yellow swirls, showing a small amount of shrinkage, sitting very flat and still lining up with all original mounting holes. The white switch tip and knobs with lightly greened text round out the original plastics.

The three-tone Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss finish is 100% original with no touchup or overspray, and a rich ring of red central to the burst. There is a spot of buckle rash central to the back, and some additional wear on the back of the bass-side body horn. Cosmetic wear otherwise comprises some usual finish scratches and nicks, largely relegated to the back, with some modest finish chipping on the treble-side lower bout body edge. The neck profile is clean and silky smooth, with natural palm wear down to the bare maple along the majority of the profile.

The original hangtag with hand-written matching model and serial details is present. The brown tolex hardshell case with orange plush interior is also included. The case is well-kept with clean brown leather ends, functional latches and the original handle.
