1962 Fender Jaguar Pre-CBS Vintage Electric Guitar Olympic White, Time Capsule w/ Case

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1962 Fender Jaguar in time capsule-clean condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original polish cloth, cable, and case. A first year example of the Jaguar model, this one-owner instrument features its original stunningly clean Olympic White nitro lacquer gloss finish with no clear coat and Desert Sand base coat, a combination of coats used on Olympic White on some examples in the early '60s.

This Pre-CBS Fender sports an alder body and maple neck capped with an unbound Brazilian rosewood fretboard. The clear, lively natural acoustic tone of the instrument is channeled through the original pair of flat pole black bobbin pickups, and in terms of tone and feel, this Jaguar is simply a joy to play and a classic example of the guitar that was Fender's top-tier instrument in '62. The original pickups have the twang, chime, and cut for which these single coils are known, boasting a bit more output than a Strat pickup and including the metal "claw" surrounds that both focus the magnetic field of the pickups and reduce unwanted hum. The flat pole piece design is also unique to Jags produced from 1962-63, yielding a fatter, fuller sound than later iterations.

The myriad of switching options and 1Meg potentiometers ensure that the Jaguar can cover much more range than a Strat, while still covering the traditional Fender single coil territory. In the Lead Circuit (hexagonal control plate), the "strangle" switch cuts low end and can make for great tic-tac tones. The Rhythm Circuit on the guitar's bass side horn introduces a set of darker tonalities exclusive to the neck pickup, with a richness and low end girth that fills things out nicely and is great for driving a tube amp or your favorite fuzz box. This Jag weighs 8lbs 2oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, where we specialize in Fender Offset instruments, with fresh 10-46 roundwound strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.

The maple neck has a quintessential late 1962 profile carve, as the overall heft and shoulder of the profile were increasing pushing into the ’63 model year, measuring a slender .810” deep at the 1st fret and increasing to a hearty handful at .970” at the 12th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is an extremely dark and tight-grained cut of this hallowed tonewood, and as one of the first veneer boards, it's fractionally thicker than later cuts. The original slender frets are flawless with their full factory height, and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut has Fender's "B" width nut measuring 1 5/8". The matching Olympic White peghead retains the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuners which turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The September, 1962 date stamp on the neck heel is intact and very bold.

On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with a pair of original black bobbin pickups. Both coils have been professionally rewound using the same spec wire, and the original wire was carefully weighed to approximate winds for the most faithful rewind possible. The bridge pickup meters at 7.12k ohms, and the neck pickup reads 6.8k. The pickups are complete with bright white original covers and gleaming chrome claws. The wiring harness is completely original, with Stackpole pots that date to the 32nd week of '62. All of the original chrome control plates are immaculate, and the original bridge pairs with the original flip-up string mute, complete with fresh foam. The vibrato has a smooth, responsive feel complete with the original arm, allowing for everything from subtle trills to deep, expressive dives, jumping back to the original pitch with ease. Original plastics include practically perfect knobs and switches, and the vibrant red tortoise pickguard sits perfectly flat with virtually no warpage or shrinking.

The bright and completely un-aged Olympic White gloss finish is applied over a Desert Sand basecoat, 100% original with no touchup or overspray. It's jaw-droppingly clean in its presentation, and cosmetic wear is limited to a few scattered shallow nicks on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the back and lower bout body edge, with a tiny bit of lacquer checking on the back of the bass-side body horn. The nitro gloss on the neck profile is flawless with zero palm wear.

The original brown tolex hardshell case is included and equally as clean as the guitar with brown leather ends, functional latches, and the original handle. The original Fender-branded polish cloth and gray cable are also included, along with the vintage (possibly original) flatwound strings.
