Up for sale, a 1962 Epiphone Futura EA-12RVT 4x8” combo amplifier in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original footswitch, owner’s manual, and bill of sale. This exceedingly rare, well-kept Epiphone amp dates to the first year of the Futura EA-12RVT’s (brief) production run, crafted in Kalamazoo, MI at the Gibson factory alongside Gibson’s own production line. The 4x8” combo is a notably uncommon configuration of these already lesser-seen amplifiers, and this particular EA-12RVT is extremely original and professionally serviced with original transformers and the quartet of Jensen P8R 8” alnico magnet speakers.

This EA-12RVT features a two-channel, four-input design, with a touch more brightness and aggression via the Channel 2 Instrument inputs. The Futura has been compared to the Tweed era Fender Bassman, and while both deliver exceptional breadth and smooth low end fullness, the 4x8” form factor of this particular Futura EA-12RVT ensures the amp has a certain punch, immediacy and treble sparkle in a particularly portable (and studio-friendly) box. The amp has a lively, dynamic feel that is very responsive to user inputs, with just the right amount of headroom before giving way to smooth, creamy breakup and overdriven bark. The spring Reverb is lush and atmospheric, and the Tremolo further broadens the available sonic palette; both effects are footswitchable.

The circuit is very original, with new smaller electrolytic caps and a full recap of the power supply. The Centralab 500K pots date to 1962, and the Magnetic Components transformers date to late ‘61. The tubes include a matched pair of vintage RCA 6V6 power tubes, an RCA 5Y3 rectifier, and a preamp section of four 6EU7s and a 12AU7. The original quartet of Jensen P8R gold 8” speakers are present, one of which has been professionally reconed, with 1962 date stamps on the frames.

This amp is in fantastic shape, with sparingly little wear on the gray tolex or wheat grillcloth. The original luggage-style handle is intact, along with the reflector cap knobs (stacked knobs for the Treble/Bass knobs and Tremolo Frequency/Depth controls), and the graphics on the chrome-plated faceplate are nigh pristine.

The original two-button footswitch is included, along with the original owner’s manual and bill of sale, dated 3-16-1962.
