Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Tremolux in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with replica Victoria Luggage-style covers and a footswitch. An exceedingly well-kept example of the early “Tone Ring” Tremolux, this amp features a full vintage tube complement from the likes of Mullard, Amperex, RCA and Sylvania.
This amp boasts the sweetness, tonal range, and harmonic clarity that characterizes the Fender Brown Panel amps, with pure, dynamic Fender clean sparkle until about noon on the Volume dial where the amp begins to get just a touch of overdrive on the notes before cascading into full tube saturation when dimed out. The bias-based tremolo circuit has a deep pulse, and the EQ controls have a huge sweep.
One very unique and desirable feature of this Tremolux is the ported Tone Ring speaker cabinet. This 1x10 enclosure was designed to deliver the clearest, most pure Fender tone, and as such utilizes a dual baffle board design in which the speaker floats between the baffles, mounted to a metal "Tone Ring." This elegant design makes the cabinet work as a closed back, ported enclosure, enhancing the range of the EQ with ample bass response and an overall sweeter, balanced tone that one simply can't get with any other Fender cabinet. This particular Tremolux is outfitted with a vintage Jensen P10PF speaker which dates to '61 (exceedingly rare and likely original given the “F” suffix). This speaker is one of the few 10” drivers of the era that can handle the wattage of the Tremolux, and its tonal profile is very flattering to the Tremolux circuit, offering bell-like top end, smooth breakup, and an articulate hi-fi voice.
The circuit is extremely original, with Schumacher-made transformers that all date to ‘61 and original Stackpole pots that have visible date codes from the 34th week of ‘61. The blue Ajax capacitors in the preamp are original, while the Minimite electrolytics (brown wrappers) and yellow Astron caps have been painstakingly drilled out with new caps installed inside and the original ends reinserted (in the case of the Minimites). Similarly, the power supply has been recapped, and the Minimite wrappers repurposed for a clean vintage look. The power tubes are a matched pair of Sylvania 6L6s, with RCA and Mullard 12AX7 valves in the preamp and an Amperex rectifier. A modern three-prong power cable has been installed.
Both the head and speaker enclosures retain their original rough blonde tolex and dark oxblood grillcloth, with just a couple of small stains from knots in the wood of the pine cabinets and the sap localized in these areas seeping through from beneath the tolex. Original hardware includes the chassis straps, sphinx glides (feet) and flat Fender logos and the remarkably well-kept molded “dogbone” handles. The faceplate is pristine, with clean graphics and the original set of white barrel knobs.
A modern replica footswitch is included, along with a pair of fitted modern Victoria Luggage-style covers.
