Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Precision Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original brown tolex hardshell case. A Pre-CBS example finished in gloss Olympic White, this Precision is an extremely expressive and soulful-sounding instrument. Tonewoods include an alder body paired with a birdseye maple neck and slab Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, delivering a deep, balanced natural acoustic sound.

Currently strung with roundwound 45-105 strings, the split coil black bobbin pickup delivers plenty of fullness and woody thump with excellent treble articulation and midrange growl. The bass balances well on a strap, notably lightweight at 7lbs 15oz, "fully clothed" with its chrome ashtray bridge and pickup covers. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Precision Bass has an incredible feel, accurate intonation, and comfortable action.

The lightly figured birdseye maple neck has a very slender C-shaped profile carve with moderate shoulder at the nut, gaining more roundness and substance as you travel up the fretboard with rolled fretboard edges in every register, measuring .775" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The Brazilian rosewood slab fretboard is a dark cut of this tonewood with dynamic, curving grain and clay dot inlay, refretted with practically perfect medium jumbo fretwire. The bass plays cleanly in all registers, and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The carved bone nut measures a full 1 3/4" in width. The headstock face features an older replacement Precision Bass waterslide decal, and the original nickel-plated long stem clover-button tuning machines have plenty of shine with only light surface patina, turning smoothly and holding pitch well. The neck heel is pencil dated 10-61 (October, 1961) and the original Sunburst finish is still present in the neck pocket, perfectly mirroring the original finish on the neck heel and ensuring that this body and neck were paired together from the Fender factory.

All of the electronics work as they should, with original windings on the split coil black bobbin pickup. The wiring harness is a vintage Fender harness a few years newer than the bass, with CTS pots that date to '65. Hardware includes the original bridge with spiral saddles, serialized neck plate, knurled knobs, and "ashtray" bridge and pickup covers, all of which have bright chrome plating. Plastics comprise a modern finger rest and a very faithful replica red tortoise pickguard courtesy of Lavaguards, with the same glossy sheen, visual depth, and wide edge bevel of Fender's Pre-CBS tortoise guards.

The gloss Olympic White refinish on the body is an older job with sparingly little wear since this finish was applied, exhibiting just a few minor dings and faint finish scuffs on the body as a whole. A small channel was also added to the body between the pickup and control cavity routes. The neck profile was also refinished with a silky smooth satin feel, highlighting subtle birdseye figuring that extends the length of the profile. Wear on the neck is limited to a few minor marks on the treble side shoulder.

The original brown tolex hardshell case is included and in excellent shape. The case features clean brown leather ends and handle, with a trio of original functional latches and an orange plush interior.
