Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Jazzmaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A well-kept Pre-CBS example of the Jazzmaster model, tonewoods include an alder body, maple neck and thick slab Brazilian rosewood fingerboard.
The original black bobbin pickup pair retains its stock windings, and both pickups have ample output. The bridge pickup has a great upper midrange aggression, sparkle, and cut. Engaging the pickups in parallel has a bell-like, chorusing quality with excellent articulation, and the neck pickup has a bold woody bark, clear and round. The Rhythm Circuit is smooth-sounding, and darker to a degree, but yet still extremely detailed. This Jazzmaster weighs 8lbs 4oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with a gentle yet appreciable increase in shoulder and chunk in the upper registers, measuring .805" deep at the 1st fret and .970" at the 12th. The thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a dark, tight-grained cut with rolled edges and a 7 1/4" radius, sporting clay dot inlay and retaining the stock slender fretwire. The frets have good meat remaining given their size, showing light wear (favoring the plain strings) on frets 1-8. The original measures 1.675" in width. On the headstock, the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines turn smoothly with light patina on the gear housings. The headstock face retains the original Jazzmaster waterslide decal. The neck heel has a bold 11-61 grease pencil date, and the truss rod nut is flush with the heel, necessitating sparingly little adjustment in the last 60+ years.
The electronics function flawlessly with untouched solder joints and Stackpole pots in the Lead Circuit that date to the 11th week of '61. Both pickups have clean black bobbins, original windings, and pickup covers that show only gentle aging. A pair of equally clean knobs and the deep red gloss nitrate tortoise pickguard round out the plastics, and the guard sits flat and shows sparingly little shrinkage. The hardware has bright chrome plating, and the vibrato tailpiece works exceptionally well in concert with the stock bridge, responding with a taut, reliable feel. The bridge also retains its chrome cover.
The gloss three-tone Sunburst nitro lacquer finish is original, with very light black lacquer overspray on the bass-side body edge, well-blended with the original finish, with a small area of additional natural forearm wear into the Sunburst. There are a few small touched-up dings on the black body edges, small finish chips on the body edges and central to the upper bout on the back, and vertical lacquer checking. The original nitro lacquer finish has been brought down to a silky satin feel on the profile length.
The original brown tolex hardshell case with orange plush interior is included. The case features functional latches and the original handle.
