Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Bassman in collector-grade condition with a 6G6 tube-rectified circuit and early transitional 2x12 speaker cabinet. Complete with the original brown canvas Victoria Luggage head and cabinet covers, and boasting a pair of properly biased USA Tung Sol small bottle 6L6 power tubes, this Bassman delivers on the promise of Fender's best golden age tube amps.

The first iteration of the "Piggyback" version of the Bassman with rough blonde tolex and oxblood grillcloth, this Brown Panel circuit pushes 40 powerful watts of pure tube goodness. Like the Tweed amps that preceded it, the Brown Panel circuits respond extremely well to picking dynamics with Fender's hi-fi, glassy clean tones. The EQ controls have a broad sweep and at around 5 on the volume dial, the amp cascades into very rich, textured tube overdrive that compresses noticeably, with the added benefit of the "sag" germane to the 6G6 circuit's tube rectified design.

The circuit is very original and has been well-maintained and recently serviced, retaining all of the original Schumacher-made transformers which date to 1961. The preamp retains many of the original blue Ajax and yellow Astron capacitors, with a few yellow tubular caps and Sprague Orange Drops as needed. The smaller electrolytic caps in the preamp have been replaced, and the power supply has been recapped. All of the original pots are intact. The power cable is the original gray two-prong, which can be replaced with a three-prong for no additional cost at the next owner's discretion. The amp features a vintage GZ34 rectifier in addition to the Tung Sol 6L6 power tubes, with a combination of vintage and modern valves in the preamp.

The speaker cabinet is a rare variant, representing a transition from the first "Tone Ring" cabs, and easily one of the first 2x12 Bassman cabinets produced. These cabs can be identified by their partial center divider and "fins" on the inside of the back panel (in effect a Tone Ring cab factory fitted with 12" drivers). The original Oxford 12M6 speaker pair is present, with dates on the edges of the frames from the 35th week of '61.

The tube chart is partially intact inside the head cabinet, and a handwritten "A" suffix on the 6G6 model. Since the 6G6 circuit was the only one to have a tube rectifier, we're advertising this amp as a 6G6 (not a 6G6-A), which is more accurate to the actual circuit in this head, and in-line with Fender's constantly changing circuits and often mislabeled tube charts. The KK stamp on the chart dates to November of 1961.

The original rough blonde tolex and oxblood grillcloth are in remarkable shape with very restrained wear on the enclosure edges. Both original dogbone handles are present (and unbroken), and stock hardware includes the original tilt-back legs, piggyback clip bars, thumbscrews, corners, and flat Fender logos. The Brown Panel faceplate is very clean, with a full complement of original cream barrel knobs.

The original pair of brown canvas Victoria Luggage head/cabinet covers are included, along with the original speaker cable.
