1961 Epiphone Texan Vintage Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Sunburst, Jim Root-Owned

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1961 Epiphone Texan FT-79 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Unlike the various reissue models, this is a genuine vintage Texan, manufactured by Gibson in the USA at their Kalamazoo factory and crafted right alongside Gibson's J-45, with identical body dimensions. This model is arguably most famous for its appearance in the hands of Paul McCartney on the Ed Sullivan show, playing “Yesterday.” This early (production began in ‘58) iteration features a shorter “open book” headstock, script logo, and traditional drop-in saddle, and this particular instrument comes from the personal collection of Slipknot’s Jim Root, aka #4.

Tonewoods include a solid spruce top and Honduran mahogany back and sides, with a one-piece mahogany neck and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. What sets the Texan apart from a J-45 (and truly makes it more akin to a Gibson AJ) is the full 25 1/2" scale length, which puts extra tension on the solid spruce top and yields an incredibly powerful sound. The instrument has excellent projection and punch, with the benefit of decades of use tempering the top for an open and exceedingly dynamic sound. There’s significant bass register roundness and heft, with equal presence afforded each string, and a dry, woody quality that extends to a sparkling treble register. Weighing 4lbs 3oz, this Texan has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and comfortable action.

This guitar is crack-free, and the gloss Sunburst nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, exhibiting broad lacquer checking in a few areas. Cosmetic wear is extremely limited, reflective of very light, careful use, with some minor nicks, largely concentrated along the lower bout rims and on the top at the lower bout, and a touch of buckle worming. The neck profile retains its smooth nitro gloss on the profile length, with a couple shallow marks and some light palm wear along the shoulders.

The original black tolex hardshell case with gold interior is included.
