Up for sale, a 1960s Teisco EG-DG lap steel in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A rare and early Teisco steel crafted in Japan, this EG-D takes its cues from the Fender Champ lap steel; both aesthetically and tonally. The single coil pickup has a potent, warm midrange with ample treble cut and sweetness. With the Tone control open, there’s plenty of top end sparkle and definition, and the lows are harmonically rich with just a touch of growl. Based on the italic T logo and model designation, this Teisco was produced circa 1964-65.
The scale length measures 22 3/4“, and string spacing measures 1 3/4“ wide at the nut and 1 11/12” at the bridge. The playing surface retains all but two of the original iridescent faux gemstone position markers (the gemstone at fret 21 and one of the gems at fret 24 are no longer present). The stock open-gear tuning machines with plastic buttons turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, and the back of the headstock retains the silver foil model sticker.
All of the electronics work as they should, with simple Master Volume and Tone controls governing the single coil pickup. The Tone control is inverted, and maximum treble response is achieved when the knob is at "0". Both original knobs are present, and the chrome-plated hardware is notably clean, with a bridge that has notable room for adjustment to intotate ideally with different string gauges and tunings.
The top of the instrument is finished in Grey (hence the G suffix at the end of EG-DG), and the back/sides are a deep Red. There is finish checking along the bass side of the body, and some light scuffing on top along the strum path. The center seam of the "sandwich" body had separated in the past along the lower bout edge, with some additional professionally addressed splitting just south of the controls on the body's rim, all cleanly repaired in-house here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar.
The original hardshell case is included, along with case candy including a vintage cable and a slide. The central latch on the case is not functional, but the other two function, and the case is secure.
