Up for sale, a 1960s Kay Jazz II in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. Perhaps most notably played by Eric Clapton in his early years, the Jazz II features the same “Kleenex Box” P-35 pickups as the earlier Kay-made Barney Kessel models, and this particular instrument benefits from a professional refret on the rosewood fingerboard.
Weighing 6lbs 13oz, additional tonewoods include a thin curly maple body with a “Thin-lite” hard maple neck. This guitar has a full and barking acoustic tone, and the Kleenex Box pickup is one of the cooler sounding "off the beaten path" 1960s single coil designs. Similar to a P-90, yet with a distinctive dry, percussive cut and a more tailored midrange, these pickups offer big, articulate single coil tone at each position on the three-way switch. This Jazz II has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
Neck Specs:
-Wood: Maple
-Shape: Soft V, measuring .885” 1st fret, 1.010” 12th fret
-Fretboard: Rosewood, 7 1/4” radius, “quadrant” inlays
-Frets: Medium, refret, no wear
-Scale Length: 26”
-Nut: 1 11/16”
-Tuners: Grover Rotomatics, Pat. Pending (vintage, replacement)
Body Specs:
-Wood: Curly maple
-Pickups: P-35 “Kleenex Box” single coil x2
-Controls: Volume x2, Tone x2, three-way pickup selector
-Hardware: Bigsby vibrato, floating rosewood bridge (vintage, replacement)
-Plastics: Reflector cap knobs
The gloss Sunburst (described by Kay as a Cremona violin brown/golden burst) nitro lacquer finish exhibits vertical checking, with cosmetic wear limited to some minor finish chips and light scratches. The gloss on the neck is clean and smooth, free of palm wear.
A vintage hardshell case is included.
