Up for sale, a 1960 Silvertone Stratotone Jupiter model 1423 in collector-grade condition, 100% original save for a new strap button and complete with a hardshell case. Manufactured by Harmony in the USA and virtually identical to their H49 Stratotone model, this 1423 has a Black Sparkle finish that was exclusive to the Silvertone-branded version of this guitar, available via Sears. Only offered from Winter 1959-63, it was one of Silvertone's more expensive offerings, and this is a particularly early example with the distinctive raised metal “Silvertone” headstock badge.
Featherweight at 4lbs 15oz, the thinline body is fully hollow, which adds a richness and bloom to the note attack, distinct from what can be achieved with a solidbody instrument. The pickups have strong output and the clear, percussive quality that you only get from a DeArmond Gold Foil (this particular iteration of the gold foil design has silver diamond covers). The tone is full and dynamically responsive, with a distinctive woody bite when picked with authority, and a glassy clarity in every pickup position. This Silvertone benefits from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The gloss Black Sparkle nitro lacquer finish is exceedingly clean, with densely packed sparkles. The presentation of this finish is particularly rare, as the sparkles are sprayed on top of the lacquer and often wear through with contact from the forearm and palm (on the neck profile), none of which is present here. The back is free from any buckle wear, with only faint vertical lacquer checking and a few tiny nicks and scuffs on the body. The neck carve is clean and smooth save for some minor scuffs through the lacquer on the treble side shoulder behind frets 6-12.
A modern molded hardshell case is included.
