Up for sale, a 1960 Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cut in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. One of the last Double Cut Specials before the transition to the SG body shape in ‘61, this Les Paul is an extremely acoustically lively instrument, weighing 7lbs 12oz with Honduran mahogany body/neck construction and a bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard.
As befits its reputation, this is an extremely acoustically lively instrument, with the smooth, muscly growl and fundamental warmth of Hondurdan mahogany paired with the treble zing and note attack of the wraparound tailpiece. The Les Paul Special has a dynamic, touch-sensitive quality, with equal parts glassy treble clarity and wooly P-90 bark. The bridge pickup is wound particularly hot at 9.95k ohms, snarling and full-bodied in its delivery, while the neck pickup is buttery smooth and broad with a woody upper-midrange chop, more conservatively wound at 7.65k ohms. The sound is balanced in all three pickup positions, and given the spread in the pickup winds, each pickup position is notably distinct. This Les Paul Special Double Cut benefits from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The gloss Cherry nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, exhibiting horizontal checking, with some minor finish loss and chipping of the lacquer along the lower bout body edge. There is some very shallow, minor buckle wear central to the back, and various minor marks from decades of careful use. The smooth gloss on the neck profile exhibits similar horizontal checking, with some shallow nicks along the profile length that have been buffed smooth from contact with the palm.
A modern molded hardshell case is included.
