Up for sale, a 1960 Fender Twin in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order. An extremely early (low 001XX serial) and well-preserved example of Fender's premier tube combo amp in the Pre-CBS Brown Panel era, the Twin features the same Triad-made transformer pair as the previous Tweed-era Twins, loaded with a matched pair of Jensen P12N speakers from 1959.
The Blonde Twin has an identical chassis to Fender's largest piggyback amp, the Showman, pushing a very efficient, dynamic and rich 80 tube watts via a matched quartet of USA-made Groover Tubes 6L6s. The cleans are big, bold, and warm, with a huge range from the EQ controls. The amp also boasts Fender's famed Harmonic Vibrato circuit. Unlike traditional tremolo (volume modulation), this circuit has a pitch shifting effect with Leslie-esque warbles and thick, pulsating swirls. The perfect middle ground between the saturated, barking tones of the earlier Tweed era amps and the clarity and shimmering cleans of the later Black Panel line, this Twin is quintessential golden age Fender tube-driven power.
The circuit is extremely original and to a degree we rarely see with this model, retaining all but two of the original yellow Astron capacitors in the preamp, a central part of the rich, musical nature of the Brown Panel-era preamps. The power and output transformers are the original pair manufactured by Triad, and the smaller choke is manufactured by Schumacher, dating to the 44th week of '60 and representative of Fender's transition between these two main transformer suppliers. The preamp retains all of the original carbon comp and "domino" resistors, and the original pots are all present as well, with visible codes from the 6th week of 1959 (CTS). The circuit benefits from a full recap of the power supply with high quality F&Ts, while the smaller electrolytics in the preamp are modern Spragues. A three-prong power cable has also been installed.
Tubes include the matched quad of uncommon USA-made Groove Tubes 6L6s, while the preamp features modern valves from Groove Tubes and Electro Harmonix. The speakers are a genuine vintage matched pair of Jensen P12Ns, complete with original bell covers and both recently reconed, wired to the stock harness. The tube chart is fully intact inside the cabinet and extremely clean with crisp corners and very little aging of the paper, retaining an "JK" stamp that translates to November, 1960.
The original rough blonde tolex is intact on the cabinet and extremely clean, and the original dark oxblood grillcloth is intact too, complete with flat Fender logo. The pair of back panels are modern replicas with similarly aged blonde tolex, and the Fender-branded molded dogbone handle is also a modern replacement. The original faceplate is in fantastic shape with all of the original blonde barrel knobs intact, and stock hardware includes the nickel-plated corners, sphinx glides (feet), and chrome-plated tilt-back legs.
