1960 Fender Concert Pre-CBS Brown Panel Vintage Tube Amp 5G12 Circuit w/ Jensen P10R Speaker Quad

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1960 Fender Concert in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The very first iteration of the Concert offered, this amp has strong ties to the Tweed-era Fender amps which were being phased out concurrently with this example. The feature set includes a Triad power transformer, a quad of vintage Jensen P10R alnico magnet speakers, a 5G12 circuit with five tube preamp, and early pinkish brown tolex with oxblood grillcloth and gold stripe.

The combination of the Brown Panel 5G12 circuit and four matching P10R Jensen speakers is truly something to behold. The amp delivers sweet, dynamic clean tones with incredible sparkle and a certain high fidelity clarity noticeable as soon as you strum your first chord. Turn it up past 5 and the amp starts to smoothly overdrive with just the right amount of bite and the complex midrange bark that makes Fender's Brown Panel amps the perfect middle ground between the growl and attitude of Fender's Tweed amps and the glassy shimmer of the Black Panel era. The EQ controls have an incredible wide sweep, and this amp is uncommonly warm for any Fender, never feeling too bright or brittle, with a focused bass register and ample headroom. The second channel boasts the Harmonic Vibrato circuit, which was the only Fender "Tremolo" circuit to ever have a true pitch shifting effect, with deep pulsating warbles.

The preamp is extremely original, with a bevy of the yellow Astron caps, central to the sweet, musical sound of Fender's Brown Panel-era circuits. There are new high quality Sprague electrolytics in the preamp and bias supply, and the CTS pots are all original, with visible date codes from the 10th week of '60. The Triad power transformers is intact, with a Schumacher-made choke that dates to the 21st week of '60. The output transformer is a genuine vintage replacement from a Bassman, dating to 1965 and more robust than the stock transformer for additional muscle and bass response. The power supply has been professionally recapped with F&Ts, and a three-prong power cable has been installed. Tubes include a new matched pair of Tung Sol 5881 (6L6GC) power tubes and a combination of modern and vintage valves in the preamp including a couple RCAs.

The Jensen P10R speakers are a vintage matched quad with clean silver frames and 1959 date codes, and while not original to the amp, these speakers are consistent with the Jensens used on the earliest Brown Panel Concerts. The original tube chart is intact and extremely clean with crisp corners and a "JG" date stamp translating to July of 1960.

The original pinkish brown tolex and oxblood grillcloth with gold stripe is intact and in great shape with only modest wear on the enclosure edges. There are small mounting holes on the sides from non-original (removed) tilt-back legs, and casters were installed on the bottom in the amp's lifetime, with the inserts still present. The original chassis straps, nickel corners, sphinx glides (feet), and flat "Fender" logo are all in great shape and intact, and the "dogbone" handle is a modern replacement.
