Up for sale, a 1958 Magnatone Custom 213 Troubador in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This Custom 213 is fresh back from our techs here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with a clean bill of health.

One of the cooler and less common mid-size Magna Electric-era Magnatone amps, the 213 boasts a single 12" alnico Oxford speaker and is powered by a matched pair of Electro Harmonix 6V6s, delivering 18 all tube watts. This amp has a lush, rich sound, yielding warm, articulate cleans and shifting into creamy tube breakup as you dial up the volume. Channel A is slightly smoother and broader, while Channel B is chiming and immediate, with an almost Vox-esque brilliance and potency. Of course one of the main draws of any Magnatone is the varistor-based true pitch vibrato, and with a width and warble unequalled in tube amp design, this vibrato circuit is in a word "lush."

This Troubador retains the original pair of Schumacher-made transformers which date to 1958, and the power supply has new electrolytics, with a three-prong power cable installed. The hand-wired point-to-point circuit is largely original, with many of the Ajax blue molded caps present along with some new tubular Mallory caps. The original CTS pots have visible date codes form the 18th week of ‘58.

The original Oxford 12KR-1 12” speaker is present, with a stamp on the frame that dates to the 46th week of 1957. The speaker has a clean frame, partial Magnatone sticker on the magnet, and benefits from a professional recone. The tube complement comprises the pair of modern EH 6V6 power tubes, with a vintage RCA 5Y3 rectifier, and vintage preamp tubes from the likes of Amperex, Sylvania and General Electric.

The original black tolex is quite a bit rarer than the usual brown bindery cloth seen on Magnatones, often reserved for Magnatone’s OEM products under brands like Titano, Panoramic, etc, but also seen on select Troubadours. The cabinet has its fair share of edge wear, and the wheat grillcloth and back panel is clean, with the chevron badge intact. The faceplate retains all of the original knobs, and the leather handle has been replaced.
