Up for sale, a 1958 Harmony H65 Cutaway archtop in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. Produced from 1956-60, the H65 was a single pickup iteration of the H62 model, finished in Blonde.
One of the earliest electric archtop offerings produced by Harmony and also one of their most visually stately and tonally alluring instruments, the H65 features a single neck position Gibson-made P-13 single coil. With a solid pressed maple top, maple back and sides, and a 2 3/4" body depth, the guitar has a articulate, full acoustic response, and the overwound P-13 pickup delivers plenty of sweet percussive cut and woody midrange bark, qualities balanced by the treble clarity and detail of maple as a tonewood. Weighing just 5lbs 10oz, we’ve had this Harmony professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-49 strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a very round, baseball bat-worthy C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders in every register, measuring .930” deep at the 1st fret and .960” at the 9th. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard features pearloid block inlay and retains the stock medium jumbo fretwire. The frets have been dressed in the guitar's lifetime, with plenty of meat left, only showing a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. There is also light finger wear into the rosewood itself on frets 1-3. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 1/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted Torque-Lok truss rod. The nut measures a full 1 3/4" in width and is a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal clarity and sustain. The headstock features a rosewood veneer and Fleur-de-Lis inlay, and the original set of nickel Waverly tuning machines turn smoothly.
The simple electronics work as intended with an untouched wiring harness. The P-13 pickup has a clean nickel cover paired with an oversized subtly transparent original tortoise pickup ring. A pair of modern brown cupcake knobs and a replica red tortoise pickguard round out the plastics. Hardware includes a replacement rosewood bridge (original is also included) and the nickel-plated harp tailpiece. This Harmony also benefits from a recent professional neck reset, and the neck meets the body at an ideal angle for decades of future viability. Visible through the segmented bass-side F hole, the model stamp and 1958 date stamp are present.
The gloss Blonde nitro lacquer finish highlights subtle curly flame figuring in the maple across the body, with vertical lacquer checking. There are a couple repaired splits in the bass-side rim adjacent to the rear strap button, and a handful of minor nicks and dings on the body, largely concentrated along the lower bout perimeter. The neck retains its smooth gloss as well, with a number of shallow marks on the profile length that have no impact on playability.
A hardshell case with zippered vinyl exterior is included.
