Up for sale, a 1956 Gretsch 6128 Duo Jet in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case, strap and factory paperwork. Notable for its lacquered top (as opposed to the Nitro drum material used on the first examples), this stunning vintage Gretsch benefits from a recent refret and carved bone nut.
This Duo Jet delivers an extremely powerful, expressive and textured natural acoustic voice with the pronounced bark indicative of the chambered mahogany body. The original pair of DeArmond Dynasonic single coils are sweet, authoritative, and (as the name would suggest) very sensitive to a player's picking dynamics. There's a bell-like twang and roundness to single notes played on the bridge pickup, while the neck position single coil has quite a bit of woof and thickness while still retaining great string to string balance and clarity. The instrument is lightweight at 7lbs 2oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with accurate intonation, low action, and 11-49 roundwound strings.
The mahogany neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with more shoulder and heft in the higher registers, measuring .825" deep at the 1st fret and 1.005" at the 12th. The bound ebony fretboard features pearl thumbnail inlay and red side dots, refretted with flawless slender fretwire. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24.6" scale with a straight neck and responsive truss rod. The new carved bone nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock retains the original Waverly tuning machines which have particularly clean buttons and still turn smoothly.
The electronics include the original pair of DeArmond Dynasonic pickups, wired to the stock harness with untouched solder joints. The original CentraLab pots date to the 40th week of 1956. The control array is complete with the original G pointer knobs, including individual pickup Volume knobs, a Master Tone, and a Master Volume knob on the treble side cutaway. The chrome plating on the "G" trapeze tailpiece, Space Control bridge and Dynasonic pickup bezels is particularly clean, and the original elevated back-painted lucite pickguard is in stunning condition. The neck set is ideal, ensuring proper proximity of the pickups to the strings and easy-playing action all the way to the last fret.
The finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, and the Black nitro lacquer is particularly glossy, with lacquer checking across the top. The finish is framed by original multi-ply binding that is impeccably clean with zero off-gassing, and the heel cap is a new replacement. Cosmetic wear is limited to light buckle worming on the back, and some scattered dings and scuffs, also largely relegated to the back. The neck profile gloss is extremely smooth, free of palm wear
The original hardshell case with blue/gray speckled exterior is included and equally as clean as the guitar, along with two original Gretsch leaflets and a vintage (presumably original) strap.
