Up for sale, a 1954 Magnatone G-70 lap steel in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. This USA-made Magnatone steel is notable for being designed in part by Paul Bigsby.
The single coil pickup has a smooth, bold tone, metering at 8.15k ohms. The trebles have a sonorous, singing quality that gives this steel a very dynamic vocal feel and a distinctive Nashville-style flavor. This G-70 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 15-36 roundwound strings.
The playing surface features star and diamond position markers. The scale length is 24 1/2“, and string spacing measures 1 7/8“ at both the roller nut and bridge. The peghead has a pristine Magnatone waterslide decal, and the original set of Kluson no-line tuning machines function reliably. The lowest tuner arm has a slight bend. The back of the peghead retains the stamped serial number plate.
Solder joints are untouched, and the original Clarostat potentiometers date to the 34th week of 1954. The chrome-plated hardware is notably clean, and the original pair of oversized plastic reflector cap knobs are intact. The Gray Pearloid wrap exhibits just one small chip on the treble side of the lower bout perimeter and some very faint scuffing on top along the pick path.
The original tweed “knucklebuster” hardshell case with leather end caps is included; all three latches work and the handle is present.
