Up for sale, a 1954 Gibson CF-100, thoroughly restored and professionally setup to play its best. A very rare Gibson acoustic only available from 1950-59, the CF-100 is essentially an LG-2 with X-braced construction, a 14 1/8" wide lower bout, and Florentine cutaway for easy access to the highest frets. Perhaps best known as the acoustic of choice for Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis, this CF-100 has a tonal profile that's incredibly warm and full-sounding. The guitar delivers a rich, broadband punch with a deep, focused rumble on the wound strings and sweet, punchy trebles. Clearly loved and played heavily, the top has the kind of dynamically responsive, yet relaxed quality attributable to an instrument that’s been worked-in for decades. We've had this CF-100 professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 12-54 strings and easy-playing action.

The mahogany neck has a round C profile with full shoulders and ideal substance, shy of the “baseball bat” carves of the later ‘50s yet offering a nice inviting handful, measuring .880" deep at the 1st fret and .965" at the 9th. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard has been freshly refretted with slender, vintage spec fretwire, and the guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. An upgraded hand-carved bone nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock is fitted with original Kluson Deluxe "no-line" tuning machines with new white buttons.

On the body, the rosewood bridge sits flush with the top, fitted with a tall carved and compensated bone saddle for optimal note definition and sustain. The neck has been freshly reset, meeting the body at an ideal angle for decades of future viability. The original red tortoise pickguard sits flush with the top with one missing tip, and the X-prefix factory order number is cleanly stamped on the heel block.

The spruce top has one repaired crack at the bass-side waist, and two similar cracks on the treble side (one at the waist and one very short repaired split between the cutaway and forward edge of the guard). The original mahogany back was compromised beyond repair, so a new mahogany back was fashioned, framed in ambered binding with original braces used where applicable. The back is flawlessly blended with the original top and sides, with finish work and aging from Riggio Custom Guitars. There is also an additional rectangular patch of new mahogany on the treble side of the body, and professional repairs on the mahogany sides include one long crack along the bass side, a shorter crack on the lower bout, and a spot of impact on the upper bout, with a couple additional minor crack repairs on the treble side. The original finish has been oversprayed on the sides, and the original Sunburst nitro lacquer on top shows wear consistent with decades of use. The smooth nitro gloss on the neck profile is surprisingly clean with just a few minor marks.

A vintage black tolex hardshell case is included.
