Up for sale, a 1954 Fender Deluxe in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The precursor to the narrow panel 5E3 circuit, this 5D3 "wide panel" Deluxe is a very original example, complete with the original Triad transformer complement. The 5D3 was a transitional model, and this is one of the earliest examples of this brief iteration, among the first to feature the dual triode 12AY7 and 12AX7 preamp tubes (as opposed to the earlier octal valves) emblematic of the gain structure associated with the narrow panel 5E3 circuit that would be introduced only months later.Incredibly dynamic and harmonically rich, the Deluxe can be glassy and clear at low volumes, but for most players the magic is in this amp's overdrive capabilities. Especially when connecting the two channels on the three input circuit with a small jumper 1/4" cable, the interactive pair of Volume controls can dial in everything from fully saturated roar and snarl, to the particular sweet buzzy qualities with ideal midrange bite. This amp reacts well to a host of effects pedals and different guitars, but truly shines with the guitar plugged straight into the amp, using your volume knob to coax clean rhythm tones and singing leads with the twist of a knob. The circuit retains the original Triad transformer pair, and the chassis is remarkably clean. The circuit has been freshly serviced with a combination of original and reissue red Astron "dynamite" capacitors and carbon comp resistors. The trio of original Stackpole pots are intact, dating to the 6th week of '54, with modern premium filter caps and smaller electrolytics to ensure optimal performance and reliability. A three-prong power cable has also been installed. The amp is loaded with a matched pair of vintage Sylvania 6L6 power tubes, a Mullard 5AR4 rectifier, and a pair of modern Electro Harmonix-branded valves in the preamp. The speaker is an era-correct Jensen P12T alnico 12" driver with an extremely clean sliver frame and Jensen foil sticker on the magnet bell. Inside the finger-jointed cabinet, the other most pertinent date code is the "DF" stamp on the very clean tube chart, which translates to June of '54. The tube chart reflects the transitional nature of the circuit, with the original octal tube complement crossed out at the factory and the new tube values handwritten in. This also extends to the circuit variant itself which is 5D3, despite the "5C3" markings. The cab also has a previous service label from Andy Marshall of THD amplifiers. The chrome on the chassis is clean, with all of the original white silkscreen text present along with stock chicken head knobs. The original tweed shows notable ambering, with some cat-related wear on the cabinet edges and a few bald corners. A modern leather handle has been installed, and the original Fender badge is intact. This Deluxe is an example that will satisfy collectors and serious players alike, and the amp has recently been given a clean bill of health, ready for your next gig or studio session.
