Up for sale, a 1953 Magnatone Melodier Deluxe model M-195-5-J in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Freshly serviced, this Melodier is the larger and much rarer 1x12 version of this model, producing a complex, sweet, and harmonically rich tone. Originally designed for use with the lap steel, the M-195-5-J boasts the same pearloid covering typically found on early Magnatone lap steels. Pushing 12 watts through the original Jensen P12R speaker, this amp has a distinctly unique response. Single coils sound jangly and clear through the Melodier, while P-90s and humbuckers can push the circuit into rich overdrive.
The circuit retains the original Triad and Albion power and output transformers, and the true point-to-point wired circuit has been professionally recapped with new electrolytic and signal capacitors to ensure optimal performance. The circuit retains one original Clarostat pot with a date code translating to the 8th week of 1953, with two modern Alpha pots. A modern three-prong cable has also been installed. The tube complement includes two Groove Tubes GT6V6R power tubes, a Sylvania 5Y3GT rectifier, and Groove Tubes and Raytheon valves in the preamp.
The speaker is the original alnico magnet Jensen P12R, delivering great clarity, excellent response across the tonal spectrum, and smooth breakup when dimed out. The speaker retains its original Jensen foil label, with a stamp on the edge of the green frame dating to the 2nd week of '52.
Cosmetically, the Pearl Burgundy MOTS covering and wheat grillcloth present extremely well, and the faceplate retains nearly all of its white silkscreen text. Two of the three chicken head knobs have been replaced.
