Up for sale, a 1951 Gibson GA-20 in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order. Featuring the original smooth brown covering, an immaculate faceplate, original Jensen P12R speaker, and a very original and professionally serviced circuit, this GA-20 is the perfect compact combo from the golden age of tube amplification. In many ways analogous to Fender's narrow panel tweed amps of the same era, the GA-20 features a four input design with a 6V6 power tube pair, 5Y3 rectifier, and octal tubes in the preamp.A real fire-breather, the amp easily cascades into ripping overdrive even when paired with single coil pickups of modest output. The Mic input is the hottest of the four, highlighting the rich midrange character of the octal preamp tubes with a real sizzle and muscle when you dime it out without losing a certain tightness and cut. The Tone control has a wide sweep, actually adding a bit more gain when turned up. The Instrument inputs are only slightly more restrained, and this GA-20 is the ideal amp for cranking to its max and letting your guitar’s volume knob do the work for everything from snappy cleans to thick drive. The point-to-point circuit has been professionally serviced, with a combination of original and modern capacitors, while all three original IRC pots are intact. Both original transformers are intact, with the open bell output transformer mounted to the speaker frame, and the power transformer mounted to the chassis, dating to the 17th week of '51. The speaker is the original Jensen P12R which has an extremely clean dark green frame, foil label on the magnet bell, and the original smooth cone. The date stamp on the edge of the frame translates to the 17th week of '51 (same week as the power transformer). The original smooth brown covering is remarkably clean, especially considering the fragility of this material compared to a conventional tolex or even tweed. The plating on the faceplate is extremely nice, retaining all of its original white silkscreen graphics. The gold Gibson "G" badge is intact on the amp's face, along with a clean "Gibson" silkscreen in the upper right corner, and the original leather handle.A padded modern amp cover is included.
