Up for sale, a 1946 Gibson LG-2 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. A well-kept and stunning-sounding golden age Gibson, this LG-2 benefits from a professional neck reset, with a modern carved bone nut and saddle. Features include a solid X-braced spruce top, solid Honduran mahogany back, sides, and one-piece neck with a proper "baseball bat" profile carve, and a Brazilian rosewood fretboard and bridge. An absolute cannon with projection to spare, this LG-2 fills a room with a single strum, yielding a sound that is both rich and nuanced. Very balanced and detailed, the wound and plain strings have equal presence. The trebles have a round, punchy quality with a sparkling snap, while the wound strings have astounding breadth and depth. Offering a high volume ceiling while also yielding a touch of compression and woody bark when digging in hard with a flatpick, this LG-2 is also very sympathetic to fingerpicking, delivering the kind of open, worked-in sound that only comes with time and careful use. Featherweight at 3lbs 12oz, we've had this LG-2 professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 12-53 strings, dialed in for easy-playing action and accurate intonation. The one-piece Honduran mahogany neck has a particularly substantial “baseball bat” C-shaped profile carve with ample shoulder and faintly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .945" deep at the 1st fret and 1.010" at the 9th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard retains the stock slender banjo fretwire which has good meat considering the fret size, showing just a hint of wear beneath the B and High E strings on frets 1-5. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. A modern hand-carved bone nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The headstock face retains the original truss rod cover and gold Gibson script text, and the headstock is currently fitted with a modern set of aged open-gear tuning machines. On the top, the Brazilian rosewood bridge is intact, sitting flush with the spruce on all edges, with very minimal deflection of the top on the lower bout. A new carved bone saddle has been installed, and the neck has been professionally reset, meeting the body at an ideal angle and viable for decades to come. Action sits at 8/64" on the bass side at the 12th fret, and 6/64" on the treble side. There is no Factory Order Number on the heel block, not uncommon for a Wartime or Post-War Gibson acoustic. The original Sunburst nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, accented by the original transparent red tortoise pickguard which sits flush on all edges with minimal shrinkage. There is vertical lacquer checking on top, strum wear on the treble side of the soundhole, and some light finish scuffs and minor nicks on the body as a whole. The top and back are crack-free, with one slender, repaired split on the rim extending from either side of the endpin (the endpin itself is also a modern replacement). The neck profile retains its original nitro lacquer gloss, extremely smooth on the profile length with extremely faint lacquer checking that’s barely perceptible to the palm.A vintage chipboard case is included.
