Up for sale, a 1919 Gibson Style A-2 mandolin, complete with the original “Faultless” hardshell case. This Gibson mandolin was crafted at the Parsons Street factory in Kalamazoo, MI with cosmetic appointments including “The Gibson” headstock inlay, ivoroid binding (including at the soundhole), double-rope rosette, and a gloss Sheraton Brown varnish finish.

Tonewoods include a hand-carved graduated spruce top, “air-seasoned” maple rims and back, Honduran mahogany neck, and ebony fingerboard. Tonally, this Gibson is chiming and immediate, with a woody chop and great natural breadth when notes ring out. There’s an overall smoothness to the sound that is emblematic of few other mandolins beyond the finest Pre-War oval soundhole Gibsons, with plenty of projection on tap, easily holding its own in ensemble situations. Weighing 1lbs 13oz, this Style A-2 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 11-40 strings and ideal action.

There are two professionally repaired splits on the bass-side lower bout on top, and one central to the back at the lower bout, along with a slight repair along the bass-side headstock wing. There’s pick wear across the strum path (minor, localized touch-up on the treble-side), and various minor dings and scuffs consistent with use. The varnish on the neck profile is smooth and clean.

The original “Faultless” hardshell case is included; the handle has been replaced (original included).
