Up for sale, a circa 1880s parlor guitar in excellent condition, complete with the original “coffin” case. This early Gilded Age parlor acoustic was crafted in the years following the Civil War, with Lyon & Healy and Larson Bros as the two most likely manufacturers (the instrument has no maker’s mark). Similar in form factor to a Martin 2 ½ model of the era, this instrument benefits from the extensive service due a guitar of its vintage including a neck reset, full refret, bridge reglue, new tall compensated bone saddle, headstock repair, and a few professionally addressed cracks.

Tonewoods include a ladder-braced Adirondack spruce top, stunning bookmatched Brazilian rosewood back and sides, and a Spanish cedar neck capped by a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. The body dimensions of the parlor measure 3” deep with a 6 ⅞”-wide waist and a lower bout width of 11 ⅝”.

Featherweight at 2lbs 6oz, this guitar has an open and expressive quality with exquisite balance and plenty of projection. Even with its modest size, this parlor fills the room with a woody shimmer from the treble register and potent, plucky wound strings. The seasoned soundboard is particularly well-suited for fingerstyle playing with exceptionally strong note-to-note detail in all registers. This parlor guitar has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 silk and steel strings and easy-playing action.
