Up for sale, a 1981 Greco PJB series bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Sporting a gloss Candy Apple Red finish and neck through body construction, this unicorn Greco is a harmonious marriage of Fender and Gibson influences, featuring a radical body shape directly inspired by the Gibson Victory Bass, and a PJ pickup configuration and Fender-esque headstock. The neck through construction offers exceptional sustain, translating well through the passive pickups with classic Precision-style thump, and focused, throaty, upper midrange punch from the Jazz-style bridge pickup. This Greco bass weighs 9lbs 1oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings and comfortable action.
The neck has a nicely rounded C shaped profile at the nut, with full shoulders and faintly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .830” deep at the 1st fret and .940” at the 12th. The slab rosewood fretboard is a very dark, tight-grained cut with pearloid dot inlay and stock medium jumbo fretwire. The frets have plenty of meat and their full factory height, showing light wear on the crowns of frets 1-9, primarily beneath the A and D strings. The bass plays well in all registers with a 34” scale length and a brass nut that measures a comfortable 1 9/16“ in width. On the Candy Apple Red headstock, the pearloid Greco logo has a very Gibson-esque appearance, with a few scattered finish chips on the headstock parameter and behind the nut. The original gold clover button tuners are intact, turning very smoothly.
On the body, the control array included individual Volume knobs for each pickup and a Master Tone control. The split-coil P pickup meters at 8.65k ohms, and the J-style bridge pickup measures 7.05k ohms. The solid brass bridge features individual adjustable saddles with plenty of height, and the original knurled domed Volume knobs are intact, with a similar replacement Tone knob (the E bridge saddle is also a modern replacement). The gloss Candy Apple Red finish exhibits a few finish chips along the lower bout body edge, a few minor scattered nicks on the body as a whole, and light finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the back of the bass side body horn. The neck profile finish is clean and glossy, save for a few small finish chips behind frets 1-2.
A gigbag is included.
