ESP's Japanese Custom Shop is famous for producing unique handmade instruments for their clientele, built to nearly any specification and catering to all idiosyncratic needs. Ostensibly built for a Japanese guitarist named Kohji, this particular Superstrat is a faithful recreation of Eddie Van Halen’s iconic “Eruption” guitar, (most famously seen on the cover of Van Halen’s 1978 eponymous debut album), sporting the exact same black-and-white striped finish as that legendary axe.

A true no-frills shred machine, this ESP Superstrat is loaded with a solitary DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker. DiMarzio’s ever-popular hot-rodded humbucker revolutionized the guitar world when it was introduced in the ‘70s, designed to push a tube amp into creamy overdrive with boosted mids, wide lows, and fat highs. Chords are crunchy and chunky, and melodic lines have a searing, white-hot singing quality that sits great in a mix; simply put, there’s a reason this pickup has been favored by artists as varied as Ace Frehley, Phil Collen, and Kurt Cobain. Weighing 7lbs 10oz, this ESP Kohji Superstrat has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, slinky action, and accurate intonation.
