Up for sale, a 2020 Fender Traditional ‘50s Stratocaster in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original gigbag and hangtags. This since-discontinued “Made in Japan” Strat was part of the Traditional Series, produced exclusively for the Japanese domestic market. It’s certainly traditional as far as tones and aesthetics are concerned, but also features some modern, player-friendly tweaks including a 9 1/2“ fretboard radius and a narrower, more easily-navigable nut.
Tonewoods include a basswood body and one-piece maple neck, and via the trio of alnico magnet single coils, the guitar offers plenty of quintessential Strat tonalities with chiming sparkle, percussive cut and bell-like sweetness on tap at the five-way pickup selector switch, plus hollow quack at the “in-between” positions. Lightweight at 6lbs 13oz, this Strat has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a fairly substantial C-shaped profile carve with generous, inviting shoulders, invoking a 1955-56 profile, measuring .875” deep at the 1st fret and .930” at the 12th. The fretboard has a modern 9 1/2“ radius, and the stock slender fretwire is pristine. There’s some subtle figuring, highlighted by the fretboard gloss, at the heel end of the fretboard. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the bone nut measures 1.615” (41mm) in width. The headstock sport a small Pre-CBS shape, and the Kluson-style tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with clean nickel plating and the correct vintage look. The “Made in Japan” text and JD20-prefix serial are present on the back of the headstock.
All of the electronics work as they should, and the alnico magnet single coils pickups are wired to stock USA-made full-size CTS with a five-way pickup selector switch. The chrome hardware and plastic parts shine like new, including the bridge base and jack cup, and the vibrato actuates smoothly and bounces quickly back to pitch. Plastics comprise the trio of knobs and the clean one-ply pickguard. There’s just a scant few faint scratches on the gloss two-tone Sunburst finish, and the smooth gloss on the neck profile is immaculate.
The original Fender-branded gigbag is included, along with the factory hangtags.
