Up for sale, a 2020 Fender Custom Shop Vintage Custom 1950 Pine Esquire in near-mint, 100% original condition, complete with the original tweed case, COA, and all hangtags and case candy. And if Telecaster functionality is required, this model comes equipped from the factory with additional electronics, hardware and plastics to convert this Esquire to its two pickup big brother.
A faithful recreation of the very first Fender electric solidbody guitar, the single pickup pine body Esquire was produced in extremely small quantities (barely a handful according to Fender) before the ash-bodied, Butterscotch-finished iteration of the Esquire (and Broadcaster/Telecaster) became the production norm.
True to the original, this faithful recreation features a slightly thinner (1.5”) laminated pine body. Its one-piece rift-sawn maple neck has a 1950 Esquire profile, no truss rod, a 7.25”-9.5” vintage compound radius and 21 medium vintage frets. With its NOS “flash coat” nitrocellulose lacquer finish and Closet Classic hardware, the Vintage Custom 1950 Pine Esquire looks like a well-cared-for original with only slight aging to its metal parts.
Featherweight at 6lbs 8oz with an incredibly resonant, balanced and just outright lively natural acoustic quality, this Esquire features a hand-wound ‘50-‘51 Blackguard pickup and "full-throttle" Esquire wiring (Position 1: Volume and Tone, Position 2: Volume, Position 3: Pickup Straight to Output). This Esquire dishes out tons of chewy twang, percussive cut, and sparkling snap, dialed in to play its best with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The one-piece rift sawn maple neck has a "1950 Blackguard" neck profile carve, a particularly massive U shape with tons of shoulder and rolled fretboard edges, measuring .970" deep at the 1st fret and 1.000" at the 12th. The medium jumbo fretwire is practically perfect, showing just a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-2. This Esquire plays cleanly in every register up the 25 1/2" scale, and the carved bone nut measures 1.650" in width. The headstock features the Esquire waterslide decal, Custom Shop chevron logo on the back, and Fender Deluxe, Kluson-style single line tuning machines.
The electronics function flawlessly, and the chrome-plated hardware has the Custom Shop's Closet Classic light aging. The lightly sprayed "flash coat" gloss nitro lacquer finish exhibits just a few light finish scratches in the clear coat of the body, and the gloss on the neck profile is nigh-flawless.
The original tweed hardshell case is included, along with the COA, build sheet, all hangtags and case candy, and all parts for a Telecaster conversion.
