Up for sale, a 2019 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard "R9" in showroom clean condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original Lifton-style brown hardshell case, hangtags, and COA. A lightweight example at only 8lbs 8oz, this Les Paul has a wonderfully smooth, even acoustic tone, with a relaxed yet defined bass register and great string-to-string clarity.
While every R9 is rightfully judged in part by the quality of its top in addition to its tonal attributes, this particular example is stunning in its presentation, with lively, three-dimensional curly tiger flame extending liberally across every inch of the top, very natural in its appearance and faithful in its figuring to many 1959 Bursts. The grain of the bookmatched maple gives the top additional depth, with some subtle mineral streaking further adding to the visual complexity and true vintage appearance, all highlighted by a rich Tobacco Sunburst.
An incredible tonal platform with all stock appointments, this R9 captures all of Gibson’s most recent tweaks to most closely match '59 spec including hot hide glue construction, an unsheathed truss rod, updated plastics, and a pair of Gibson's “CustomBuckers,” their latest and most highly praised PAF iteration available exclusively in select Custom Shop models. Featuring Alnico III magnets, these low-medium output pickups have all the chirp, honk, and bloom you could want. The set in this particular guitar is dynamic, highly detailed, balanced, and comfortably versatile with any playing style. The bridge has plenty of bite and growl, while the neck pickup has the buttery girth and power one expects without sacrificing clarity. Demonstrative of what quality tonewoods are capable of, there are few things finer than the rich warmth of mahogany paired with a carved maple top that adds cut and attack. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, this Les Paul plays effortlessly with solid intonation, slinky action, and 10-46 strings.
The quartersawn one-piece mahogany neck has a chunky, substantial C profile with generous shoulder and a hair less overall heft than some of Gibson’s more aggressive “baseball bat” carves, measuring .870" deep at the 1st fret and graduating to .975" at the 12th. On the dark chocolate brown rosewood fretboard, the frets are flawless, retaining their full factory height and well-rounded crowns. The scale length is 24 3/4", and the nylon nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The headstock has the correct 17-degree angle, with a thin holly veneer on the face and Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines with transparent keystone buttons.
The electronics are untouched since the factory, with the CustomBucker pickups wired to a harness featuring Gibson spec’d CTS 500K short-shaft audio-taper potentiometers, 20 gauge bus wire, and the stock Gibson Bumblebee .022/400V capacitors. The corner of the control cavity has the requisite "R9" stamp too. The stock ambered bonnet knobs are present, and the nickel hardware is flawless, with the slightly more muted satin appearance consistent with Gibson's Historic instrument line.
The highly figured Tobacco Sunburst top is contrasted by the bold “brick red” hue of the back and neck with prominent grain filler in the mahogany. The figuring on the carved maple cap extends all the way to the edges of the top with no bald spots, and the guitar is showroom clean, with wear limited to a few pick scuffs across the guard. The guitar also exhibits some of the aniline dye bleed which naturally occurs with many Bursts, particularly on the neck binding and lower bout binding on top. The neck profile is flawless.
The original brown Lifton-style Gibson hardshell case with pink interior is included, as well as the original hangtags, factory paperwork, and COA.
