Up for sale, a 2018 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1960 Les Paul Special, near mint with a custom color Spanish Gold gloss nitro lacquer finish. Complete with its COA, hangtags, and Lifton-style hardshell case, this Les Paul has a feature set indicative of a 1955-57 Special, despite the "1960" model name misnomer. With a single cutaway solid mahogany body, extremely chunky '50s-style "baseball bat" neck profile carve, and wraparound tailpiece design, the guitar has a lively acoustic response with a huge ringing tone that sustains beautifully with great string to string balance and a touch of growl.
The stock pickups take full advantage of the resonant and warm sounding one-piece slab mahogany body, with the sweetness, glassy articulation, and midrange grind for which the P-90 is known. It's hard to beat a slab of mahogany, a no-nonsense '50s C neck profile carve, and a pair of P-90s for a notably pure and dynamically responsive sound. The guitar weighs 7lbs 13oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with Thomastik Power Bright 11-46 strings and low action.
The one-piece mahogany neck profile has Gibson's quintessential "baseball bat" chunky C shape, with plenty of girth and roundness. The profile shoulders are very full, and the profile fills the palm while still being very easy to chord. It's the sort of neck profile that adds substantially to the resonance, sustain, and richness of the instrument, measuring .925" deep at the 1st fret and 1.035" at the 12th fret. The rosewood fretboard features flawless original medium jumbo fretwire with perfectly rounded crowns, as well as cream binding and red side dots. The neck is arrow straight, and this guitar has the precision build quality and effortless playability that one expects from Gibson's Custom Shop. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock features the stock Kluson Deluxe strip tuners, Gibson pearl logo, and inked serial number.
All of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder on the wiring harness which features Bumblebee tone caps. All of the original hardware is intact and the gold plating is ostensibly factory aged, given the otherwise pristine nature of the instrument. The factory custom color Spanish Gold gloss nitro lacquer finish exhibits just a couple exceedingly faint marks on the edges of the slab body, and a bit of isolated finish checking adjacent to the knobs. The neck profile gloss is flawless.
The original brown Lifton-style hardshell case with pink interior is included, along with the COA and all hangtags.
