Up for sale, a 2018 Collings 290 Custom in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and ephemera. Collings guitars are handcrafted in Austin, TX, with premium components and hand-selected tonewoods. This custom-built 290 is their spin on the classic LP Special platform, featuring solid Honduran mahogany body and neck, a pair of ThroBak ‘52/’54 Vintage P90 reproduction pickups, Schaller Signum wraparound tailpiece, and a gently aged 1959 Faded Crimson nitro lacquer finish.
The tonewood complement yields a midrange-forward acoustic response with plenty of natural bark and warmth, qualities faithfully captured by the stock pair of ThroBak ‘52/’54 Vintage P90 pickups. ThroBak spare no expense when it comes to the accuracy of their reproduction pickups, going so far as to wind these P90s on the same Geo Stevens vintage design winder with custom traverse and tensioning system as used to wind P90s in the ‘50s at the Kalamazoo factory. Of course, these pickups faithfully capture the glassy clarity, detail, and midrange growl of the iconic originals, with an authoritative chewiness at the bridge and a thick punch with sweet trebles at the neck. Featherweight at 6lbs 14oz, this Collings has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.

The gloss 1959 Faded Crimson nitro lacquer finish is meticulously applied and hand-sanded between coats for an ideal thickness and natural acoustic response, and this finish has been gently aged, exhibiting extensive broad lacquer checking across the body as a whole. Beyond the synthetic aging, this guitar is very clean, with cosmetic wear limited to a tiny area of faint buckle rash central to the back. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss.
The original Collings-branded, Ameritage-made black tolex hardshell is included, along with ephemera including the ThroBak CoA (dated 10/12/18), Schaller Signum user guide, and an alternate opaque control cavity cover.
