Up for sale, a 2014 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1958 Les Paul Standard "R8" in near mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original COA, hangtags, and brown Lifton-style hardshell case. Featuring a VOS lacquer finish, a set of Custom Bucker PAFs, and the updated plastics Gibson introduced in '13, this R8 Les Paul has a lightly figured bookmatched Lemon Burst top.
The Custom Bucker humbuckers are some of Gibson's most universally celebrated and revered PAF reissues, and these vintage-spec pickups offer a range of classic, articulate and responsive tonalities, with a bit of bite and growl in the bridge position and the ability to coax everything from balanced, shimmering cleans to rich, churning overdrive from your favorite tube amp. The neck pickup in contrast has the girth and power one expects from the neck position without sacrificing clarity. Demonstrative of what quality tonewoods are capable of, there are few things finer than the rich warmth of mahogany paired with a carved maple top that adds cut and attack. The guitar weighs 9lbs 4oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, solid intonation and slinky action.
The quartersawn one-piece mahogany neck has a round, substantial baseball bat C profile carve with generous shoulder, measuring .930" deep at the 1st fret, graduating to 1.015" at the 12th. The frets are practically perfect, retaining their full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing just a touch of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. The headstock has the correct 17 degree angle, with a thin holly veneer on the face and single line tuning machines that match the look and feel of the original Klusons perfectly, with lightly aged transparent keystone buttons.
The wiring is untouched, with the PAF stickers intact on the baseplates of the Custom Buckers and bumblebee caps in the harness. The hardware has the lightly aged appearance given to the nickel plating at the Gibson factory, and the updated plastics complete the package with vintage spec pickup rings, pickguard, and lightly dished amber bonnet knobs. The VOS nitro lacquer Lemon Burst finish highlights the broad, bookmatched flame figuring which extends most prominently across the lower bout, and the binding shows some of the usual aniline dye bleed common with '50s Standards (and Historic reissues), particularly on the neck binding. Cosmetic wear is limited to a few light pick marks across the strum path, and a few pinhead-sized nicks and extremely faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the back. The gloss on the neck profile is extremely clean and smooth.
The Gibson Custom Shop COA and a few hangtags are included, along with the brown Lifton-style hardshell case.
