Up for sale, a 2013 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard R9 in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original Lifton-style hardshell case, CoA, and all hangtags.
This Les Paul Standard represent the pinnacle of the Gibson Custom Shop’s quality, faithfully recreating the iconic ‘59 Les Paul and benefiting from Gibson Custom’s 20th Anniversary Specifications (adopted in 2013), including a two-piece carved flame maple top, hot hide glue neck fit with long tenon and unsheathed truss rod, updated plastics, period-correct Aniline dye, CustomBucker PAF-style pickups, and a nitro lacquer gloss Bourbon Burst finish.
Lightweight for a Les Paul at 8lbs 15oz, this instrument has a lively and pronounced voice when strummed unplugged, with great bark in the low end, and sparkling, round-sounding plain strings that deliver plenty of zing and also a richness that makes lead lines cut through with great clarity and body. Fitted with first year (introduced in 2013) CustomBuckers, these pickups are Gibson's latest and most highly praised PAF iteration available exclusively in select Custom Shop models. Featuring Alnico III magnets, these low-medium output pickups have all the chirp, honk, and bloom you could want. The set in this particular guitar is dynamic, highly detailed, balanced, and comfortably versatile with any playing style. The bridge has plenty of bite and growl, while the neck pickup has the buttery girth and power one expects without sacrificing clarity. This Les Paul has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a substantial C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders, representative of a larger early ‘59 shape, measuring .905” deep at the 1st fret and 1.005” at the 12th. The bound Indian rosewood fretboard sports celluloid trapezoid inlay, and the medium jumbo fretwire is practically perfect, only exhibiting a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-3. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock has the correct 17 degree angle and thin holly veneer. The Kluson Deluxe single-line tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with sharp-edged transparent keystone buttons.
The electronics function as intended, with the CustomBucker pickups wired to the stock harness with braided leads and bumblebee tone caps. The small “R9” stamp is present in the control cavity. The nickel-plated hardware complement includes the pickup covers, ABR-1 bridge and stopbar, all of which exhibit light factory aging, and plastics comprise the amber switch tip, cellulose acetate butyrate pickguard and pickup surrounds, and the quartet of gold bonnet knobs, all of which exhibit varying degrees of superficial splitting adjacent to the pot shafts (purely cosmetic).
The Bourbon Burst gloss nitro lacquer finish highlights the tight curly flame figuring that extends liberally across the top with no bald spots. There are just a scant few minor marks and finish scratches on the body as a whole, and the smooth gloss on the neck profile is immaculate.
The original Lifton-style brown hardshell case is included, along with the CoA and all hangtags.
