Up for sale, a 2007 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard R9 in near mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original Lifton-style hardshell case and hangtags. The pinnacle of Gibson's Custom Shop quality, this guitar boasts a premium carved and heavily figured bookmatched maple top, solid mahogany body, Burstbucker PAF humbuckers, meaty '59 neck profile, and a nitro lacquer Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish.
The top's proper deep dish carve showcases the intense, top-shelf figuring one expects on an R9. The top has extremely tight, three-dimensional tiger flame creating a prominent chevron effect behind the bridge, with broader valleys and curls of figuring on the upper bout.
Tonally, everything stems from the acoustic properties of the instrument, and this Les Paul has a clear and pronounced voice when strummed unplugged, with great bark in the low end, and full, round sounding plain strings that deliver plenty of zing and also a richness that makes lead lines come through with great clarity and body. Weighing a particularly light 8lbs 14oz and balancing well on a strap, the sound is clear, lively, and harmonically complex in all registers, and the original Burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups do an excellent job of capturing everything we love about the sound of a Les Paul Standard. There's plenty of power and articulation in the bridge position, with thick and round sounds from the neck pickup that are ideal for lead work while still staying defined. Both pickups deliver the great string-to-string balance that the guitar inherently has acoustically as well. The guitar has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, playing flawlessly with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The mahogany neck has a baseball bat C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and ideal heft and roundness, measuring .895" deep at the 1st fret and 1.015" at the 12th. The bound dark Indian rosewood fretboard features vintage-spec pearloid trapezoid inlays, as well as stock fretwire that shows virtually no wear with perfectly rounded crowns. Notes ring out clearly up the 24 3/4" scale, and the stock nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width. The headstock has the correct 17 degree angle, holly veneer, stock truss rod cover, and original Gibson Deluxe double line tuning machines with lightly greened translucent keystone buttons.
All of the electronics function flawlessly with the Burstbucker PAFs wired to the original harness with stock pots and upgraded vintage paper-in-oil tone caps. The nickel hardware has gleaming plating on the pickup covers, ABR-1 bridge, and tailpiece. The aged plastic hardware is also extremely well-kept, with the stock pickup rings, pickguard, and amber bell knobs. Cosmetic wear is limited to a few tiny nicks mostly relegated to the back and body perimeter, and a few exceedingly faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss central to the back. There is just a hint of checking on the binding at the fret nibs, and zero aniline dye bleed. The gloss nitro lacquer on the neck profile is flawless
The original Lifton-style brown hardshell case is included, along with a bevy of original hangtags.
