Up for sale, a 2006 Gibson Custom Shop Historic VOS '61 Les Paul SG Standard in 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case and original hangtags. With a Cherry nitro lacquer finish and nickel hardware, this SG has a feel and tone that captures the magic of this model's introductory year. Notably lightweight at 6lbs 15oz, this "Les Paul" faithfully reproduces the guitar that would become the famed SG following Les Paul's decision to no longer endorse the guitar that was destined to be one of Gibson's most iconic models.
The original Burstbucker #1 and #2 PAF humbuckers feature Alnico II magnets and deliver an array of traditional Gibson tonalities, with a sweet, dynamic and harmonically-rich bridge pickup, and a neck position humbucker that's fat and sweet while still retaining ideal clarity. Acoustically resonant with great bark and a wooly midrange quality, this SG exemplifies everything we love about Gibson's modern Custom Shop Historic offerings. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with 10-46 strings, this Les Paul SG plays well with low action and spot-on intonation.
The Custom Shop Historic Les Paul SG Standard stays true to the specs of this iconic instrument. Its distinct features and legendary tone are meticulously remade with all the precision and accuracy expected from Gibson Custom, including the solid mahogany body with twin cutaways, pointed horns, beveled edges and nickel-plated hardware. Other standard appointments include cellulose trapezoid fingerboard inlays, single-ply binding along the fingerboard and a slim neck profile carve. In addition to these details, the Les Paul SG reissue also benefits a one-piece rosewood fingerboard, Gibson Deluxe machine heads, accurate fingerboard binding color, Burstbucker #1 and #2 humbuckers created in the image of the original PAFs, and period-correct Aniline dye that brings out the grain in the mahogany beneath the gloss Cherry finish.
The mahogany neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve and round shoulders, with faint aniline dye bleed on the cream neck binding. The profile measures .850” deep at the 1st fret and .940” at the 12th. The bound dark rosewood fretboard features the original fretwire with its full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-7. The guitar plays easily up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The headstock features the correct 17 degree angle and holly veneer, with inlaid pearl Gibson logo and Kluson-style Gibson Deluxe tuning machines with aged green single ring tulip buttons and push-in bushings.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, with PAF decals on the baseplates of the Burstbucker humbuckers, Bumblebee tone caps, and treble bleed cap/resistor pairs soldered to the Volume pots to ensure ideal top end detail when rolling down the knobs. The hardware shows some surface patina on the nickel pickup covers, and plastics include a quartet of reflector cap knobs and the four-ply pickguard which shows some requisite light pick scuffing. Wear on the Cherry nitro lacquer finish includes light buckle rash at the bass-side waist on the back and also extending above the control cavity cover, with some minor marks on the body as a whole, mostly relegated to the back. The neck profile retains its smooth nitro gloss with only a few tiny nicks on the profile carve.
An aftermarket brown tolex case with pink plush interior is included, along with the original hangtags and factory paperwork.
