Up for sale, a 1998 Fender Jag-Stang in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, finished in Sonic Blue and complete with the original hangtags. From the original "Crafted in Japan" run of the Jag Stang, this Fender is a no-nonsense tool perfectly suited to creating both the distorted churn and raw single coil cut heard across Nirvana's catalog. The guitar weighs 8lbs 6oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, slinky action, and accurate intonation.
Famously known for being designed by Kurt Cobain of Nirvana when he took two polaroids of a Mustang and Jaguar and cut them together, the Jag Stang is in step with the features of both of these classic short scale Fender models, while also satisfying the higher gain pickup needs of Nirvana's chief architect.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, modeled after one of Cobain's favorite '60s Mustangs. The profile measures .800" deep at the 1st fret and .920" at the 12th. The scale length is 24", with a vintage-spec 7 1/4" fretboard radius and 1 9/16" nut width. The thick slab rosewood fretboard retains the original flawless slender frets, and the guitar plays cleanly in every register. On the headstock, the original Kluson-style chrome tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should, and the small "Designed by Kurt Cobain" sticker is intact. The "Crafted in Japan" script text and O-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate.
All of the electronics work as intended, with Fender Japan's Dragster humbucker in the bridge position and an ST-Vintage single coil at the neck. The pickups are governed by on/off/on pickup selector switches and a pair of Master Volume and Tone knobs. The hardware has gleaming chrome plating, including the barrel saddle bridge and vibrato unit which has a very smooth response, complete with the original arm. The plastic parts are near mint, and the white pearloid pickguard provides great contrast to the slightly greened Sonic Blue gloss finish. Cosmetic wear on the thick slab body is limited to just a few small dings on the back treble-side lower bout edge, and sparingly little additional wear on the body as a whole. The ambered gloss on the neck profile is flawless, with some light curly flame figuring along the profile length.
The original "Craft Premium" hangtag, model/serial tag, and manual are included, along with the Fender-branded gigbag.
