Up for sale, a 1997 Fender Stratocaster '54 vintage reissue model in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, upgraded with Van Zandt pickups and complete with a hardshell case. A very early Crafted in Japan example, this guitar was made exclusively for the Japanese domestic market and is rarely seen outside its country of origin. Boasting a particularly rare Shell Pink gloss finish on the body and featuring a V profile carve only seen on Fender Japan's '54 reissue models in this year of production, this Stratocaster is lively and resonant acoustically. The natural properties of the instrument translate faithfully through the upgraded trio of Van Zandt black bobbin single coils, coupled to a five-way pickup selector switch for an array of traditional Strat tonalities. The middle pickup is RWRP, ensuring hum-cancelling functionality and quintessential Strat quack and cut in the 2 and 4 positions on the switch. The neck pickup is broad and bell-like, while the bridge pickup is snappy and clear. The guitar weighs 7lbs 12oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a soft V profile carve with notable depth and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .920" deep at the 1st fret and .985" at the 12th. The original slender frets are practically perfect with well-rounded crowns. The truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted, the neck is straight, and the guitar plays well in all registers, adhering to vintage Fender spec with a 7 1/4" fretboard radius on the 25 1/2" scale. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and on the headstock, the guitar features a round string tree and Kluson-style Gotoh tuning machines which have the correct vintage look and turn smoothly. Just above the four-bolt neck plate, the "Crafted in Japan" text and early A-prefix serial are present.
All of the electronics work as they should, and the USA-made Van Zandt pickups are cleanly wired to a fully upgraded harness with USA-made CTS pots, a five-way Switchcraft switch, and a Sprague Orange Drop tone cap. These pickups are an incredible value and feature all of the hallmarks of vintage Fender design, with black fiber bobbins, staggered lightly beveled alnico magnets, and cloth-covered leads. The vibrato has a large block for great sustain, and the unit is very responsive for smooth surfy warbles and deeper dives, jumping back into tune with ease. The chrome hardware is clean as can be save for light patina across the bridge saddles, and the plastic parts include uniformly aged pickup covers and knobs. Cosmetic wear on the gloss Shell Pink finish is limited to a few light scuffs on the pickguard and only a couple pinhead-sized nicks on the body as a whole. The gloss finish on the neck profile is clean and smooth.
An era-correct Fender-branded SKB hardshell case is included.
