Up for sale, a 1996 Gibson Les Paul Standard in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtags. Featuring a vibrant Heritage Cherry Sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish with subtle birdseye figuring on the two-piece carved maple top, this Les Paul was ordered by Gibson's Japanese distributor Yamano. Gibson's USA-made guitars distributed via Yamano are often considered among their best, featuring the highest quality woods hand-picked for Gibson's discerning Japanese audience. This particular Les Paul even comes with its "Premium Quality for Japan" hangtag.
Weighing 9lbs 15oz, this Les Paul is un-chambered (unlike many of the Standards that came after it), and the solid mahogany body has a certain sustain, punch, and fullness indicative of the early modern Standard models. Those qualities are translated well by the stock humbuckers, a 490R and 498T. The 490R neck pickup offers plenty of chime and warmth, featuring Alnico II magnets and a PAF-style sonic range with a slight midrange bump. The bridge pickup is a 498T with Alnico V construction, overwound for plenty of bright, snarling Gibson roar. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, this Les Paul Standard is dialed in with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The neck has a slender '60s-style C-shaped profile with well-rounded shoulders in every register and a gentle increase in overall heft further up the fretboard, measuring .830” deep at the 1st fret and .990” at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard has a 12” radius, pearloid trapezoid inlay, and flawless fretwire, just shy of medium jumbo with their full factory height and well-rounded crowns. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock retains the original "Standard" truss rod cover, and the guitar features the original double line Gibson Deluxe tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch with lightly greened tulip buttons.
All of the electronics work as they should, with stock pickups that have "Gibson USA" embossed baseplates. The original pickup covers have been cleanly desoldered, revealing the double black humbucker bobbins. The solder joints on the wiring harness are untouched, with stock Alpha pots and ceramic disc tone caps. The chrome-plating is notably clean on the Nashville bridge and stopbar, and all the original plastic components are present including gold speed knobs, cream pickup rings and switch surround, and the one-ply pickguard.
The nitro lacquer gloss Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish on the two-piece carved maple top highlights subtle birdseye figuring, most densely clustered on the bass-side lower bout. Cosmetic wear includes scattered dings and light buckle wear on the back, with some checking on the binding on the upper bout at the strap button and cutaway, and on the lower bout adjacent to the rear strap button. The gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth and clean, with a small area of concentrated checking behind fret 11 that is imperceptible to the palm while fretting.
The original brown tolex Gibson USA hardshell case is included, along with the original Gibson/Yamano hangtags.
