The Vintage '63 is a genuine \"Made in Germany\" example and a discontinued model, representing Hofner's highest tier of modern production. The bass features traditional tonewood construction with a highly figured flame maple back, maple rims, an arched German spruce top, and three-piece maple\/beech neck capped with a thick slab rosewood fretboard.This fully hollow Hofner has a distinctive acoustic thud and pluck, smooth and sweet-sounding via the pair of 511B Staple pickups. The bass has a warm, woody, upright bass-like amplified tone with a pillowy thump. It's simply *that* sound, and the Beatles sonic signature is further cemented by a set of 45-105 medium tension flatwound strings. Featherweight at 4lbs 8oz, we've had this Hofner professionally setup here at Mike \u0026amp; Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and accurate intonation.The maple neck has a medium depth U-shaped profile carve at the nut, with more overall heft and shoulder further up the fretboard, measuring .830\" deep at the 1st fret and .980\" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard is an extremely dark and tight-grained cut, retaining original flawless slender fretwire. The scale length measures 30\", and the fretboard is 1 9\/16\" in width at the zero fret just forward of the nut. On the headstock, the Hofner script logo is clean as can be, and the stock open-gear tuners turn smoothly with pearloid buttons.The electronics function flawlessly, and the hardware has bright nickel plating, with just a touch of patina on the pickup covers. The teacup knobs and small white pearloid control plate match vintage spec too (no pickguard is currently installed). The Sunburst finish is warm and very vintage-correct in its tint and saturation, highlighting the prominent, three-dimensional bookmatched flame figuring in the maple on the back and rims. The bass is exceedingly well-kept, with just a couple microscopic marks and a faint finish scratch or two in the clear coat.
