Up for sale, a 1983 Gibson SG Standard in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original “chainsaw” molded hardshell case and all hangtags. This exceedingly well-kept SG is loaded with a pair of Tarback humbuckers, among the last instruments to feature those particular pickups before they were phased out in ‘84.
This SG Standard has plenty of natural warmth and midrange growl on tap via the mahogany construction, and the original pair of "Tarback" humbuckers have a different magnet structure and fewer winds than the T Tops produced in the same era. Coupled with the black epoxy that gave these humbuckers their name and ensures great feedback rejection by suppressing microphonics, the Tarbacks are a lively, sparkling pickup pair. Plugged in, the bridge pickup has a surprising twang and clarity, but with a smooth top end, while the middle and neck positions have plenty of sweetness and percussive cut. This SG Standard is lightweight at 7lbs 2oz and balances well on a strap, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
