Up for sale, a 1983 Fender American Vintage ‘62 Jazz Bass in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and hangtags. One of the famed "Fullerton" reissues produced from 1982-84, this bass was one of the very first vintage reissues offered by Fender, made on the same machines at the Fullerton, CA factory that carved the Pre-CBS originals. When the Fender company changed ownership and production switched to the new Corona factory for the 1985 model year and beyond, new templates were made, as the originals were not procured when the company changed hands, thus elevating the rarity and vintage-correctness of the Fullerton factory instruments.

Beyond its Fullerton provenance, here at the Guitar Bar we love a vintage instrument with some character, and this Jazz Bass has a few notable mods including a fretless conversion and removed pickguard in the style of Jaco Pastorius, along with a too-cool Brazilian National Radio foil sticker. Additional stickers from the previous owner, “Ken,” have been retained on the headstock and pickguard. This bass is truly Ken-ough.

Traditional tonewoods include an alder body, maple neck, and slab rosewood fingerboard, and this Jazz Bass weighs 8lbs 8oz. The Fullerton single coil pickups (one gray bobbin, one red bobbin) yield quintessential Jazz Bass burp, grind, and low-end heft, particularly round and thumping with the Tone knobs dialed back to taste. This Fullerton ‘62 Jazz Bass has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, dialed in with 45-100 flatwound strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation.

The three-tone Sunburst finish is accurate to vintage-spec with a burst that is only two-tone beneath the area where the guard is typically mounted, and the finish exhibits limited checking. Cosmetic wear includes pick scuffing on top, buckle rash central to the back, and a number of minor dings on the body as a whole, primarily concentrated at the lower bout. The ambered gloss on the neck profile is smooth to the palm. A “Ken” decal has been applied to the headstock.

The original tweed hardshell case is included, along with the original tortoise pickguard, ashtray bridge/pickup covers, individual string mutes, and a couple hangtags.
