Rich Seagull II in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, finished in a rare Trans Blue Burst and complete with a B.C. Rich-branded flight case. A rare piece of B.C. Rich history, the Seagull II served as a transitional model produced for six months from 1975-’76, bridging the gap between B.C. Rich’s first ever solidbody electric guitar model and the iconic Eagle that is still in production today.

Introduced in 1974 as B.C. Rich’s first production solidbody, the original Seagull helped pioneer neck-through construction and debuted the brand’s signature heelless neck joint, carrying all the hallmarks of this early boutique builder. While innovative in its construction, evocative body shape, and versatile control array, the Seagull’s distinctive bass-side waist body point was often critiqued for digging too far into the player’s torso, and was overhauled in 1975 in favor of a second cutaway. Thus was born the more ergonomic Seagull II, which swiftly evolved into BC Rich’s longstanding Eagle design. With an estimated 13 to 40 Seagull IIs produced, this example’s low “002” serial number marks it as the third guitar B.C. Rich built in 1976, out of roughly 300 that year.

Weighing 7lbs 9oz, tonewoods include neck-through Honduran mahogany construction, a bound 24-fret ebony fingerboard and rosewood headstock veneer. Until 1975, B.C. Rich dismantled and rewired Gibson humbuckers to suit Neal Moser’s coil-split and phase circuitry. When Gibson objected, the company turned to Guild for an extremely brief window before turning to DiMarzio for bespoke four-conductor pickups which remained standard until 1986. The Guild HB-1 humbuckers deliver a sweet, thick churn that channels the rich growl of the mahogany build, extra bold and beefy in the neck position with a more focused, throaty bite at the bridge. The onboard suite of controls ensures maximum versatility and includes a Master Volume, three-way pickup selector, Preamp Volume, Preamp On/Off switch, 6-position Varitone, Phase switch, Dual Sound switch, and a Master Tone, with the red-tipped mini toggles of this hand-built period. This Seagull II benefits from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

Neck Specs:

-Wood: Honduran mahogany
-Shape: Slender C, measuring .825” 1st fret, .910” 12th fret
-Fretboard: Ebony, 24-fret, Mother of Pearl snowflake inlay
-Frets: Medium jumbo, light wear favoring the plain strings on frets 1-9
-Scale Length: 24 3/4”
-Nut: 1 5/8”
-Tuners: Grover Imperial
-Headstock: Rosewood veneer, “R” inlay
-Serialization: 76-prefix on back of peghead (1976)

Body Specs:

-Wood: Honduran mahogany
-Pickups: Guild HB-1 humbuckers (four-conductor)
-Controls: Volume, Tone, three-way pickup selector, Preamp Volume, Preamp On/Off switch, 6-position Varitone, Phase switch, Dual Sound switch
-Harness: Active electronics powered by 9V battery
-Hardware: Leo Quan Badass wraparound tune-o-matic bridge
-Plastics: One-ply black pickguard, reflector knobs, chickenhead knob (varitone), pickup surrounds, rear control cavity cover (repaired split in the plastic)

The rare gloss Trans Blue Burst finish appears close to a two-tone tobacco burst at first glance with the rich blue exploding to life under stage light. The gloss on the neck profile is smooth and clean with a bit of light chipping on the binding edge and a few light indentations on the spine which are not distracting to the hand.

A B.C.
