Up for sale, a 1971 Martin D-18S in excellent, crack-free condition, complete with a hardshell case. A relatively rare D-18 variant, this well-kept Martin has a unique feel and tonal response with 12 frets clear of the body, a slotted headstock, slope shoulder body shape, and a full 1 7/8“ wide nut. This Martin benefits from recent service befitting an instrument of this vintage including a neck reset and carved bone nut.
Delivering ample projection and power, this D-18S features an X-braced spruce top paired with mahogany back and sides, ensuring a resonant and lively traditional tonewood platform. The guitar has an extremely articulate and sparkling treble register, with clarity in the midrange frequencies and a smooth, rich bass growl when digging in hard with a flatpick. Fingerpicking yields a particularly balanced response, too, and given the placement on the bridge on top consistent with the 12 fret design, the bridge is further from the X brace, allowing the top to vibrate more freely for a notably big, bold range of tonalities. This D-18S weighs 4lbs, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and easy-playing action.

Crack-free, this D-18S is well-kept, with subtle lacquer checking on the gloss nitro lacquer finish. There is light buckle wear on the back and treble-side rim, some minor dings and finish scratches from careful use, and a couple doweled extra strap button holes on the neck heel. The neck profile retains its smooth nitro gloss, with some shallow marks along the profile length that are not distracting to the palm while fretting.
A brown tolex hardshell case is included.
