Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Coronado II in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Featuring its original custom color Lake Placid Blue nitro lacquer finish with matching peghead, this Coronado is featherweight at 5lbs 13oz with a fully hollow maple body that offers a bold, clear natural acoustic tone with both immediacy and depth.
The lively natural properties of the body translate well through the pair of original DeArmond-made single coil pickups. The pickups deliver a wide range of tones, from cut and sparkle in the bridge position, to more mellow and full-bodied tones at the neck. One of the hallmarks of any DeArmond pickup is their percussive clarity and string to string balance, and this Coronado exemplifies those particular tonal qualities. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Coronado features fresh 11-49 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a medium depth C-shaped profile carve with moderate shoulder and a fast, effortless feel, measuring .850" deep at the 1st fret and 12th frets. The rosewood fretboard is bound and sports pearloid block inlay, retaining the original slender fretwire. The frets have been leveled and crowned in the guitar's lifetime, currently showing just a touch of wear beneath the plain strings 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1 5/8" in width. The peghead is finished in Lake Placid Blue, with the original "Coronado II" waterslide decal intact. The original Fender "F" tuners are also present, turning smoothly and holding pitch well. The December, 1966 date stamp is bold on the neck heel, with the correct "paint stick" markings in the neck pocket indicative of a factory finish.
On the body, the electronics all function as intended, with each DeArmond-made single coil governed by its own pair of Volume and Tone knobs. Both pickups are original with their Fender-embossed covers, and the wiring harness features replacement potentiometers. Hardware includes the original trapeze tailpiece, and a bridge that comprises vintage ebony feet and chrome thumbwheels, paired with a modern Fender bridge base which has the correct threaded saddles. Plastics include a vintage quartet of knobs and a modern gold multi-ply pickguard faithful to vintage spec.
The gloss Lake Placid Blue nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, framed by checkerboard binding with notable greening of the clear coat. Cosmetic wear is limited to some minor dings and finish scratches on the body as a whole, and forearm wear through the clear coat on the lower bout on top. The neck profile is silky smooth, with palm wear through much of the gloss behind frets 1-7.
The original black tolex Victoria Luggage hardshell case with gold plush interior is included. The case shows modest edge wear, retaining the original latches and handle.
